PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- No one won the Powerball drawing last night, and now the jackpot has risen again.

It's now at $700 million.

In case you missed it, last night's numbers were 31, 43, 58, 59, 66 and a Powerball of 09.

The next drawing is Saturday and maybe someone will win.

**********************************************************************************

β€œThe Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made their living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets. Winston had nothing to do with the Lottery, which was managed by the Ministry of Plenty, but he was aware (indeed everyone in the party was aware) that the prizes were largely imaginary. Only small sums were actually paid out, the winners of the big prizes being nonexistent persons.”

― George Orwell, 1984

I have never seen each PB jackpot get so high.

Almost like they are trying to distract everyone.

I only play once it gets to 75% of the record, and only one draw. Otherwise it’s an idiot tax.

I’d like to see the winner buy The Arizona Republic newspaper in Phoenix and let Turning Point USA run it.

When I do play the lottery I limit myself to $1. If you put down $1000, it doesn’t increase your chances very much.

My theory is that it’s rigged. They rake in more tax money that way.

Usually when I bother to play the big-ass draw games (Megamillions, Powerball) I have no number matches. This time I had a whopping two! Still worthless. :^)

They added more numbers to the pool of available balls. I think in both the base numbers and the powerball/megaball so that your odds of winning have dropped considerably since the games began.

That’s why there are fewer winners and bigger jackpots. They realized there are lots of people who would only play when it gets way up there. So bigger jackpots bring more players and more players means more money for your government.

Plus, doubling the cost to play from $1 to $2 also makes them tons more moo-la.

How many millions does anyone need, anyway? It seems like some of these amounts could be life-destroying.

I had a scary moment during the last $1B+ Lotto.
It was reported the winning ticket was bought at the same store I bought mine.
Still working so clearly it wasn’t me.

Are all powerball tickets priced the same? Are there different ways to play (aside from picking your own numbers vs letting the computer pick)?
