WHITE LAKE TWP., Mich. (WJBK) - For the past year Diane Gordon leaves her home for VC Fresh Marketplace where she works down Highland Road, five days a week..
"Two point seven (miles) to be exact," she said.
She knows the exact distance because for the past year, she walks that route. Her car broke down last February. She was walking home on Jan. 21, when she stopped at the BP gas station for a snack.
And before she could set foot inside, noticed something peculiar.
"I looked down on the ground and found a plastic bag with a large sum of money in it," she said. "When you turned it over there was even more money."
So she grabbed it - and knew exactly what she needed to do.
"This doesn’t belong to me, I need to call a police officer," Gordon said.
"It never really crossed her mind to do anything other than turn it over," said Lt. Matthew Ivory.
White Lake police came out to investigate.
"Inside the bag was also wedding cards, these were gifts from a wedding that occurred that day," said Ivory.
And of course, there was cash inside.
"I think it was $14,780 worth of cash," he said.
That was money Dianne could certainly put to use.
"Especially under the idea that she doesn’t have transportation," Ivory said.
Aside from freezing cold days, Diane doesn't mind the walk to work. Not having a vehicle means she's missing out on other things in her life.
"Grandkids have sporting events that she can’t drive to, jumping into the car and driving over to see them doesn’t happen," Ivory said.
"It could have made my life a whole lot easier but it’s okay, it didn’t belong to me," she said.
Police tracked down the newlyweds and returned the money.
"It was to a young couple who had just got married that day it belonged to them," Ivory said.
Then police turned their attention back to Dianne.
"One of our officer’s wives actually set up a GoFundMe," Ivory said. "(Because) the world could probably use a few more Dianes."
"I’m floored," she said. "I mean, I didn’t do anything special."
If you’d like to help get Diane a car you can find a link to that fundraiser HERE.
All she asks, is: "You find something that doesn’t belong to you, don’t keep it."
The law will be sure the IRS learns of this wedding dough. Pay taxes on your gifts is woke today.
I don't know what you did to be so vilified. Must be a bunch of dog people. ;-)
Hopefully, they'll settle down after their morning coffee.
LOL Same here. I was just thinking, "we didn't invite the RIGHT kind of people to our wedding!"
“That includes finding a $1 bill in the middle of the road. Leave it.”
Even smarter advice in today’s world, since it might be laced with fentanyl.
When we were kids we were going to Grandpa’s farm — a two-hour drive form home.
About an hour into the ride Dad looked in the back seat and saw my little brother with a tulip. We didn’t grow tulips, but our neighbors did. Dad turned the car around and my bro had to return the tulip, and apologize to our neighbor. Then we were on our way.
I shopped at that VC over Christmas holiday... Family lives down the road...
Truthfully....I’m not so sure I wouldn’t keep it!!!!
I can honestly say I wouldn’t.
I have aplenty, thanks to God....................
Awww, that’s a cute story, and an important lesson for your little brother!
Uncle Billy
Did you ever get a decent pozole recipe later on?
If not, here’s the one my daughter sent me once. It’s very easy. We add smoked chicken breast to this rojo version. Quite good. This uses canned beans, and canned hominy, though you could do your own from dried if you wanted to soak them yourself.

Where’s the money, Uncle Billy!?!?!
Well said
She should get a reward from the people the money was returned to.
