American professional freestyle skier and former world champion Kyle Smaine died after getting caught in an avalanche in Japan Sunday, his newlywed wife has confirmed.

The 31-year-old Lake Tahoe, California-based pro skier was one of five foreign nationals from the US and Austria who were swept in the avalanche while back-country skiing in the central prefecture of Nagano, Japan, around 2:30 p.m. local time Sunday.

Shortly before his death, Smaine shared a video on Instagram showing him skiing during a marketing trip to Japan.

The deadly avalanche took place on the eastern slope of Mount Hakuba, Nagano police said.

Smaine and four other men were skiing in two separate groups on the mountain, which is 8,100-foot high.

The other three skiers managed to climb down the mountain on their own after the avalanche, but Smaine and another man were discovered Monday with no vital signs.

Japanese weather authorities had issued an avalanche warning for the area, following heavy snowfall in the past few days.

Fellow pro skier Adam Ü, who was skiing with Smaine Sunday, told outdoor magazine Mountain Gazette that they had just finished a run when a third skier in their group trigged the avalanche.

This is the pre-covid VAX “died suddenly” that we used to see from time to time. As opposed to today’s “died suddenly” when young healthy people die while playing sports or just walking or sleeping. Would be good if we could get back to a place when the only young healthy people who “die suddenly” are associated with a tragedy while engaged in risky, yet rewarding activities like back country skiing.

There’s a region of Japan (somewhere near the city of Sapporo IIRC) that gets something like 20 feet of snow each winter.

Ski resort Alta in Utah averages 500 inches (42 feet) of snow each year.

“The key to life is to hide under your covers and never come out.” Now, that is funny. High five.
Sadly, many steep skiers die at a young age. Pyschologists call it “flirting with death.” Proof: https://youtu.be/Cr7_4LrF8As

**The key to life is to hide under your covers and never come out.**

Tell that to the free stuff crowd. Maybe they will stay in bed 24 hrs instead of 12 to 16, and we’ll all be safer.

Ski bums and surf bums tend to have untimely ends.

His wife was questioned as to why she was tossing hand grenades down the hill.

Skiers and boarders now have "avalanche airbags". They are worn like a backpack and come equipped with a rubber expanding air bladder that is powered by a small can of very high-pressure air. There is a ripcord on the harness straps that trigger bag inflation.

If you get into an avalanche, you pop your airbag and ride along on the surface of the avalanche debris and walk (or ski) away.

Skiers can now ski or board into avalanche terrain that would have been a death event just a few years ago! They do not protect against rocks, cliffs or drop-offs as it appears happened in this incident.

“They aren’t saying it wasn’t the vax. So it’s the vax.”

True, if it was possible in his case to outrun the avalanche, the stress associated with doing that would have popped his heart, if vaccinated.

Is the name of the company that manufactures them "Acme?"
