What makes the SCORPION unit so controversial?
Recently, the unit has garnered significant criticism, particularly after the Nichols case which has also raised concerns that the SCORPION has strayed from its core mission of targeting more serious crimes. “They were in unmarked cars, why are they conducting traffic stops?” said Antonio Romanucci, one of the lawyers for Nichols’ case to CBS.
Multiple allegations against the SCORPION unit
Several reports citing criminal justice reform activists and some residents of the city said that the officers who are a part of the SCORPION unit had previously been accused of using excessive force. Additionally, Nichols’ case has also largely drawn attention to Memphis’ multiple specialized units and elite police teams.
A report by BBC citing local media said a man named Cornell McKinney who is also from the city, had a tense encounter with the unit on January 3 where he alleged that the officers in the unmarked vehicle accused him of carrying drugs and threatened to “blow his head off” while pointing a weapon at his head. Subsequently, he filed a complaint at the Memphis Police Department but did not receive any response.
Additionally, one of the officers who arrested Nichols had also been sued by a man who accused him of beating him as a prisoner around eight years ago. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Crump also spoke about several allegations against the SCORPION unit and cited an incident where one of the alleged victims was a 66-year-old.
“He said he was confronted by this unit and he was brutalized, and he had pictures of his injuries…And so, it was foreseeable that something tragic like this was going to happen,” said Crump, as per ABC news. The Memphis Police Department has not responded to these allegations.

When Benjamin Crump is involved, nothing good can come of it.
And, on Faux, I heard Ted Williams say he is a good friend of Crump’s.
Williams, retired PD detective (i think) is always brought on as some kind of “expert”.
I can’t even look at the dude now w/o seeing Crump.
I figured there’d be more people coming out with stories about being beaten by these rogue cops.
Also, I hear the whole idea of this so called “scorpion unit” was the brain child of, thought up and implemented by none other than the black female police chief......the whole thing falls on her if you ask me.
Oh. That's how armed robbery goes down, few more adjectives happen, some hits and kicks but overall--yeah.
I figured there was more to these brutal cops, just a department keeping the complaints quiet. A cop doesn’t go that rogue in one off moment and not 5 of them, nor the responding paramedics either.
I believe him. I saw the interview yesterday of him talking about the incident.
Then watching Video 1 of the ‘traffic stop.’ Cop coming up had his gun out and then switched to the taser.
This is another one of those “do people who name things understand words?” situations. Like we all know the “you knew I was a scorpion when you picked me up” fable, and yet some idiot still decided to name their “special” police unit scorpion?!
Of course then there’s the whole history of these kind of special units. It never ends well. Eventually they all turn into Rampart. Oddly enough, just like the scorpion fable. This is a big bunch “who didn’t see that coming?”
Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis fired from previous Atlanta job after botched sex crimes probe
It’s all over Twitter that the scorpions are actually members of the Vice Lords gang out of Chicago. Allegedly, dude was doing one of the “officer’s” girlfriend, and this was a hit. It has to be true because it’s on Twitter, right? Plausible as anything else I’ve heard.
Previous problems with the Goon Squad
My surprised face 😏
The whole idea of Scorpions driving around in unmarked police cars is a recipe for disaster.
In a crime ridden city like Memphis, who wouldn’t be scared if an unmarked car starting flashing their lights.
There's an old saying about a leader's responsibility - "That captain is responsible for knowing what the first mate had for breakfast".
However, when one of the groups runs into an ordinary citizen, the citizen can get run over and crushed.
So how does this happen?
Democrat policies are soft on drugs, don't support families
Police have to do more
Democrats then get tough on police - good police quit
Softer admittance standards or quota-filling leads to less qualified police.
Less police, or police holding back, leads to even more crime
Out of control violent crime leads to cities creating militarized enforcement units, proliferation of no-knock raids, SWAT teams invading neighborhoods.
Eventually, someone gets caught in the crossfire of police vs gangs.
Outrage - blamed on “racism and white supremacy” Big lawsuits, more DEI funding.
Leads to even more crime.
... The democrat money machine perpetually feeds itself.
Bet they discover that the SCORPION unit was established by a white guy.
You come up with a good acronym, and the details work themselves out. /s
Wouldn’t be the first time these “special” units went bad.
so, this “hit” has over a dozen other cops involved, plus EMT’s...on a busy Memphis street, 8 o’clock at night...all done with body cams recording...this sounds plausible to you??...really??..
for you all that supposedly hate the media, you sure do lap up what they dish out....geez.
Dr. Todd Grande on YouTube, analyzes these things from a psychosocial angle. He said S.C.O.R.P.I.O.N. sounds like it was named by a 13 year old who had been reading too many Marvel comics.
