Horror in London's West End as man is crushed to death by a 'telescopic urinal' on Shaftesbury Avenue - just yards from Harry Potter theatre

A man has been crushed to death by a hydraulic urinal while working on the device in London's West End this afternoon.

Emergency services tried to save the man, who has not been named, but he died at the scene at Cambridge Circus on the junction between Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road - outside the Palace Theatre, where the Harry Potter play is being shown.

The victim was performing maintenance on the pop-up urinal which rises from the pavement for those out in London at night.

The theatre is uncertain whether tonight's performance of the stage show at 7pm will take place, a spokesman said, adding: 'It is an ongoing situation. We will try and give as much notice as possible.'

**SNIP**

Hydraulic, pop-up urinals were brought into use by Westminster City Council about 20 years ago in an attempt to discourage street urination.

Just urinals? Women don’t have to pee? I guess only when traveling by car.

Euros have truly bizarre cultural traits. I suppose this "hydraulic urinal" is designed to keep them from pissing in public.

In France, they have to remind people not urinate on a church:

Where to begin...?
- what activates the lift/lower hydraulics?
- does the user have any privacy?
- are these just for men?
- it looks dangerous if activated with someone in it
- why does it descend in the first place? Is it cleaned below the street?
- how did this fool get underneath it while descending?
- etc. etc.

I think I would pee on the street rather than enter that thing.

But street crushing is ok? Who will want to pee in that now?

That was my first thought.

“Well, I should really shut off the electricity to this thing before I work on it, but that means driving two blocks to the tunnel entry and walking another block to the switches. It’ll be okay - I’ll just be careful not to hit the “close door” switch.”

Hmm. I bet there isn’t a “close door” switch - it probably lowers automatically after a minute of not sensing anybody in the unit.

“....just yards from Harry Potter theatre”.

Does that phrase add context to the story? I’m just curious having no personal knowledge of the location of this incident. Does the Harry Potter theatre make the death worse? Better? More expensive? Understandable?

It looks like an oversized version of the baseball delivery elevator at Busch Stadium that failed in its first try at the All Star game (1966 or so?). It was supposed to save time by replenishing the home plate umpire’s supply without having to wait for the ballboy to run over. It was supposed to pop up out of the ground, but got jammed in the open position during the game and couldn’t be lowered.

It was paired with an automated tarp rollout system that also failed and was soon abandoned.

As far as I remember, neither system ate any umpires.

Looks like it would be something that when you enter it you are taken to a secret lair.

I did that once at a party. It was dark and I could barely see the property corner fencing that turned out to be electrified to keep cows in. Like getting tazed in my urethra.

THAT’LL wake you up.

I was in Brussels for a beer festival. They set this big open four station urinal right in the intersection under the traffic light. It was wide open with no privacy.

Four men could use it at the same time.

In Amsterdam there were just pipes sticking up at intersections for pissing.

I prefer trees... being an old farmer.

Was the theater suppose to provide some magic sort of protection?

More likely, some passing Slytherin cast a urinalium maledicto spell. You know how they get after a few drinks.
