—IMHO, the best ski area I ever skied on—
Climate change. Blah, blah, blah.
“”With climate change, which is real,” Nope, surprised I got that far....
I ski patrolled there for a season.
It’d be a good story, but I never watch productions by leftist inferiors.
The people living in Sandy neighborhoods on the approach to the canyons will be screwed. A big ugly gondola ruining the view they moved there for 50 years ago. Get rid of the pass that allows out of state interlopers priority, not to mention cheaper skiing, than the locals.
“Skiing has become so popular that getting to resorts from cities like Denver or Sacramento or Salt Lake City can often mean sitting in hours of gridlock traffic.”
News to me. And I only live about 15 miles from Alta. Still the traffic in the canyon itself is heavy. If you are staying in the city it’s easier to take a bus up from the mouth of the canyon.
Having grown up just north of Salt Lake and done a lot of skiing, I know they need some sort of transportation improvement. The canyon is narrow and winding and traffic often has to wait for avalanche control before entering. However, just like the idiots who protested the Olympics, there will be plenty of malcontents who will complain and drive up the cost through legal (as in lawyers, not actual law) means. And they’ll do it because they “want the canyons preserved” and not “spoiled:.
I also wonder just where they will build the needed parking at the base of the canyon. There is not a lot of open land there.
In the 60’s they built the Sandia Peak Tram in Albuquerque. You could play golf in town and within an hour be skiing on the slopes on the east side of the Crest.
A gondola is a gaping hole into which various entities will pour money into to construct and which will never, every pay for itself.
Climate change is real. It's been going on since the planet came to be. What's not real is anthropogenic climate change. I mean seriously, humankind let off over 2,475 nukes, 520 of which were above-ground, since 1945. If that didn't do it, nothing we do will do it.
If it was air conditioned, it’s something I’d probably like to ride in the Summer.
Looks like the longest in the US is 3.1 miles.
One in China is apparently the longest at 7.4km (appx 4.6 miles) with the Serbians planning one just short of 9 km (~5.6 miles)
The solution would be to allow only local cars on the road, service trucks at night, and require visitors to ride the bus.
Not enough bus drivers? Raise the pay - and the fares.
I skied Snowbird and Alta in March of 79. Best powder I ever skied. Peruvian Gulch & Regulator Johnson is where I lived for 2 weeks.
Yes, the snow is perfect and there are many beautiful resorts in Utah. But the roads and lifts are not made for this many people. A gondola might take a percentage of the traffic, but they’re going to need a dozen other ideas to address the volume.
And we haven’t even brought up the overwhelmed ski claim carousel at the airport.
Exactly right - if you’ve got a half-billion to spend, you should be able to buy a boatload of buses and a hell of a lot of drivers, even if you have to pay them twice the going rate. Heck, toss in free lift tickets and you could probably staff an enormous fleet of buses just with ski bums - can’t be much worse than baby-sitting lift lines.
Alta and Snowbird were my favorites ski spots in the states when I was able to make it out to SLC, and after a long day on the slopes, I appreciated the availability of the ski bus to get me back down the mountain at the end of the day. And actually Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood were pretty darn good as well, if not in the class with Alta and Snowbird.
The last time I was at Alta and Snowbird was back in ‘76. They were rather easy to get to at the time. Have things changed! I had no idea.
Here in North Idaho, we have five resorts within an hour and you hardly ever have to wait for a lift, even during Christmas Week. The snow isn’t as good as the legendary Utah snow, but it’s quite good. And lift prices are a lot less than the glamour resorts in Utah, Colorado and California.
Targhee was always a great break from Jackson,
especially for us old farts.
