SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl running back Tony Pollard suffered a fractured left fibula Sunday that will require surgery, sources said.
Pollard suffered the injury with 1:24 left in the first half of the Cowboys' 19-12 divisional round loss to the San Francisco 49ers when he was rolled up after an 8-yard catch. Pollard needed help to the sideline and was wearing an Aircast on his left leg as he was carted to the X-ray room inside Levi's Stadium. He was subsequently ruled out for the game.
"That hurt," Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said. "Just a guy that brings so much to our offense, brings so much to our team. His energy. His energy on the sideline, in the huddle, the way he gets guys going. He's a special teammate, special player and obviously that one hurt. It hurt us. Wasn't able to create as many explosive plays as we planned, and I'm sure he would've been a big part of some of those had he not gotten hurt."
Without Pollard, the Cowboys were left to rely on Ezekiel Elliott and rookie Malik Davis. Elliott had not averaged 4 yards per carry in the previous five games and averaged a career-low 3.8 yards per carry this season, playing a good portion of the year with a knee brace to protect a sprained medial collateral ligament. Davis had 161 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries in the regular season.
Elliott had 10 carries for 26 yards Sunday, while Davis did not have a carry.
Pollard's injury could not have come at a worse time for the Cowboys or for him.
He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in March and had the best season of his career. In 16 regular-season games, Pollard had 1,007 yards on 193 carries. He scored 12 touchdowns this season, surpassing the total he had in his first three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.
The Cowboys were banking on Pollard's speed against a San Francisco run defense that finished second against the run (77.2 yards per game). Before getting injured, he had six carries for 22 yards and two catches for 11 yards.
I knew it was broken when I saw the replay. We have Direct TV so we could play it back in slo-mo and it looked real bad from the front camera angle..................
“That hurt,”
Yes, yes it did. And the interceptions you threw didn’t help either.
Ankle can go either way. Ask Lamar. That second, late-season sprain is probably putting him on another team next year, and probably not one he can take to the Super Bowl.
Not that that is happening to Mahomes, whose 10-year stretches to 2030, but not everyone on the Cheaps has the same: JuJu Smith is on a year-to-year; Valdes is in the middle of a 3-year; and Kelce's extension expires in 2025. Mahomes wants that 2nd win and HoF first-rounder, he better lay it all down vs. the Bengals.
👍🤦♂️..............................
For one day anyway, he was brilliant.
At least Mahomes doesn’t rely as much on his legs, so he could still be serviceable. But it’s harder when you rule out the chance of him running, even if he doesn’t do it a lot.
Well it’s no fluke he got them to the Super Bowl last year, and he’s beaten both the Bills and Chiefs in that period.
He gives that team their identity, which is the biggest value of a quarterback.
I think McCarthy thought that if his players didn’t know what was going on neither would the Niners. He really is a crap coach.
I also think Trevor Lawrence is on the verge, I expect big things next year from him and the Jags.
AFC is going to be fun for the next few seasons. It’s truly a great time for quarterbacks. I think also, Herbert and Pickett will also be real good soon. So you are potentially talking having 5 or 6 potential future Hall of Famer quarterbacks playing right now in the AFC.
Green Bay fans could have told you that.
And when Sean Peyton goes to Houston, Dallas won’t even be Texas’ Team.
Tape it up and get back out there!
And, it also looks like I’m closer to eventually winning my bet that the Lions will win a Super Bowl before the Cowboys win their next one.
My favorite co-worker is a Green Bay fan. We spent years complaining about McCarthy. Then my least favorite team hired him, happy day happy day.
I don’t think Peyton will go to Houston. That team is a train wreck. He’s going to save himself for a job that doesn’t suck.
Burrow is emerging as the #2 Quarterback in the NFL, and Trevor Lawrence made a huge leap this year. Dak probably 8-10 at this point.
"'Fractured tibia, sergeant'? 'Fractured tibia, sergeant'? Ooh. Proper little mummy's boy, aren't we? Well, I'll tell you something, my fine friend, if you fracture a tibia here you keep quiet about it!"
How bout’ them Cow(girls)! I’m listening to a Dallas sports-talk station 96.7FM/1310AM. It reminds me of MSNBC on election night when Trump won. Heh heh. If there’s a better Dallas station for sports talk I’d like to know. Same for Philadelphia. Tee hee.
Oh yeah. That right there was some funny stuff.
I have heard Denver, as well.
