Increased coffee consumption may reduce severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in those with type 2 diabetes

A study has revealed that caffeine, polyphenols, and other natural products found in coffee may help reduce the severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among overweight people with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

NAFLD is a collective term for liver disorders caused by a build-up of fat in the liver. These can lead to liver fibrosis, which can progress to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver cancer. NAFLD is not the result of excessive alcohol consumption, but is instead often the result of an unhealthy lifestyle with little exercise and a high-calorie diet.

Study participants with higher coffee intake had healthier livers. Subjects with higher caffeine levels were less likely to have liver fibrosis, while higher levels of non-caffeine coffee components were significantly associated with reduced fatty liver index scores. The study suggests that for overweight T2D patients, a higher intake of coffee is associated with less severe NAFLD.

Researchers surveyed 156 middle-aged borderline-obese participants on their coffee intake, of which 98 subjects had T2D and provided 24-hour urine samples. This was used to measure caffeine and non-caffeine metabolites—the natural products of the body breaking down coffee.

Caffeine intake is associated with decreased liver fibrosis in NAFLD and other chronic liver conditions. It has been suggested that other coffee components, including polyphenols, reduce oxidative stress in the liver, in turn reducing the risk of fibrosis as well as improving glucose homeostasis in both healthy and overweight subjects. All these factors may also alleviate the severity of T2D.

John Griffith Jones, Ph.D., said, "Due to diet and lifestyle, there is an increase in obesity rates, T2D and NAFLD. Our research is the first to observe that higher cumulative amounts of both caffeine and non-caffeine metabolites in urine are associated with a reduced severity of NAFLD in overweight people with T2D."

Caffeine and nicotine get me through the tax season every year. Helps during the off-season as well.

two genes that affect fatty liver are pnlpa3 and TM6SF1. it affects the way you process fat but scientists still don’t have a good grasp of it.

Even if you only have half expression of the gene issue...losing a small amount of weight could help rectify if you have some of the genetic defects

I recently finished building my own little coffee roaster. A fluid bed with a borosilicate roasting chamber. About 100g a roast and each roast takes 10 minutes active time and about 5 minutes prep time.

It is a fun hobby and you can get some incredible green beans online for dirt cheap (Saturdays roast were $7.50 a lb for something roasters are charging $25+ Same farm, Same grade.). I roasted Ethiopian Yirgacheffe specific farm, specific processor specific grade for the week on Saturday. 3 roasts and I am set. 2/3rds of a lb.

I am manually controlling all the variables right now but am working on putting the controls together to auto control it with an Arduino and a open source free software coffee roasting package used by even some larger roasters. It will allow me to dial in control tighter and replicate exact roasts.

Roasted that week is so much better than roasted 3 weeks ago. It makes a substantial difference.

Finally a hobby that is good for me. Brewing beer was not.

Dang. I want to get a cup of coffee at your place. Color me impressed.

That sounds really cool - from building your own roaster and carefully choosing the right beans to working on an automation process.

Agreed, add to that 5 Hour Energy. At my age, the stuff’s only good for 3 hours…lol.

This tax season will be different for me. First go with a home office, looking forward to the challenge. I set up dual monitors yesterday, was issued a company laptop last week.

I work in the tax department of a large real estate company, we’ll be preparing the 1065s for 150+ LLCs and the personal returns for the officers, and other employees who ask us. Not a bad employee benefit. I survived 6 tax seasons at public firms, don’t see much difference here.

My company has free coffee (sometimes made by our CEO), catered lunch every Tuesday. This place is a revelation. CEO’s the only exec who lives in Dallas, others live out of state, including my two supervisors. They fly in every other week. The rest of the accounting department work from home on Monday and Friday.

For now, I’ll work from home evenings and weekends through 4/15, also from home during inclement weather.

I hop from hobby to hobby and a few stick. Cooking stuck. Computers stuck. AV Tech stuck. Home repair stuck. The art of low and slow BBQ stuck. I really enjoyed the technicalities of brewing but had to give it up... but I can consult... LOL. Electronics and electrical system making is sticking now.... I will have to see.

Coffee roasting is downright fun, and as with many of the hobbies that stuck I get to share and really enjoy giving joy or being able to help. You can get a version of my setup as it is with manual control for about 200 too 250 clams refurbed (Fresh Roast SR series) and Sweet Marias has the best beans I have been able to find (Price quality) and are extremely forward about the info on every shipment. I am reasonably new to the hobby but when you know you know. I will be roasting all my own beans from now on. Takes some research to learn but that is the fun of a new hobby.

When you love doing something you become good at it. 10K hours and you are a master.

Coffee reduces iron absorption.

The body accumulates iron in the liver and excess iron harms the liver.
