The War on Competence
American Thinker ^ | 22 Jan, 2023 | Clarice Feldman

The Left has replaced the class-war game with a war on competence and achievement, hiding beyond claims of racial and sexual equity.

Decades ago, the Left played the class-war game. These days it’s a war on competence and achievement, hiding beyond claims of racial and sexual equity.

In Virginia, we are to believe that on their own, high school administrators in seventeen schools decided not to inform those of their students who had scored high enough on their scholastic aptitude tests to be named National Merit semi-finalists. Of course, it was not coincidental. Two factors are involved: The spurious claim that schools can achieve the impossible -- equal outcomes for all -- a claim which must not be challenged by contrary facts; and prejudice against high-achieving students -- most likely, given historical records, majority Asian and white. Hugh Hewitt thinks this was a clear violation of the students' civil rights for which Faitfax County may end up paying heavy legal damages.

A Massachusetts congresswoman, Ayanna Pressley (who represents, inter alia, most of Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts), plainly revealed what is the basis for the war on intellectual achievement:

“IQ is a measure of whiteness.”

It isn’t, of course. It’s a combination of genetics (dare we say this?), home environment, including familial respect for achievement, personal interests and motivation, and to a certain extent, the caliber of the education received.

This is not just a K-12 excrescence. For some years now it has metastasized to higher education.

Richard Vedder noted four years ago trends in this direction which have only accelerated since then.

So if a teacher becomes unemployed, do all of the other teachers need to lose their jobs too?

Semifinalists? No, these were Commended students, according to other articles, who receive certificates.

The names of Semifinalists are listed on the schools' websites.

I am so very glad I don’t have kids in any school today. I would have to homeschool because it is that or a few teachers would not be teaching anymore an I would b probably be in jail. How do these educators have any right to be involved with kids after this? They should be out on their ears and never be able to teach again.

High achieving Asians undermines CRT’s white supremacy narrative. CRT just provides excuses for why blacks don’t do well by blaming others.

The articles keep confusing the terms. (I didn’t know the different terms, either, until a few other freepers questioned the story when it first started spreading.)

These were “commended” students, as the article linked in your post says. The students weren’t semifinalists.

Here’s the difference: https://www.college-matters.com/news/2018/9/1/ask-the-consultant

No, the TAXPAYERS of Fairfax County may end up paying heavy legal damages. The worthless bureaucrats who did it will pay nothing.

Thought this quote so compelling that I saved it:

There's a thin veneer of hyper-competent professionals who keep the lights on and the water drinkable. Replace them with the incompetent and the water turns brown and the lights go out.

Wish I could remember where I got it from

Although I think he kind of went off the deep in later years, Vincent Bugliosi’s book on the OJ affair titled, “Outrage,” provided an profound analysis of the legal issues, circumstances and parties involved. In the book he had a brilliant little riff on competence and in reality, how few people truly exhibit it in their professions.

What was the name of the Kurt Vonnegut story where strong men had to wear suits with heavy weights sewn in to handicap them?

I can confirm that from my experience hiring and managing engineers. And fancy degrees from prestigious universities did not correlate to competence. Not at all. My best hires always came from places like Michigan Tech, and definitely NOT from U.of M., for example.

Excerpt from C.S. Lewis "Screwtape Proposes a Toast":

(The scene is in Hell at the annual dinner of the Tempters’ Training College for young devils. The principal, Dr. Slubgob, has just proposed the health of the guests. Screwtape, a very experienced devil, who is the guest of honour, rises to reply:)

"What I want to fix your attention on is the vast, overall movement towards the discrediting, and finally the elimination, of every kind of human excellence – moral, cultural, social, or intellectual. And is it not pretty to notice how “democracy” (in the incantatory sense) is now doing for us the work that was once done by the most ancient Dictatorships, and by the same methods?"

If you want to know the REAL reason the awards were withheld, read the twitter thread below.

https://twitter.com/AsraNomani/status/1605707506801483776

Especially interesting is the following section where a school administrator ADMITS the awards were withheld ON PURPOSE.

“Dec 21, 2022
TJ admin Brandon Kosatka admitted to TJ mom Shawna Yashar they hide National Merit honors on purpose: “We want to recognize students for who they are as individuals, not focus on their achievements,” adding they don’t want to “hurt” the feelings of kids who don’t get the award.”

The fact that at least 17 other schools in the SYSTEM did the same thing shows the discrimination was SYSTEMIC, and not an accident.
