Fisherman missing at sea after he’s dragged overboard by tuna in Hawaii

Mark Knittle of Captain Cook was fishing with a friend four miles off the coast of Hōnaunau on the Big Island when he hooked the ahi just before 5 a.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.

“The fish is huge,” Knittle reportedly said just before he was dragged overboard.

After witnessing Knittle plunge into the water, the friend tried to grab the line but missed.

The friend saw Knittle on the surface for a brief moment but disappeared “within seconds,” police said, adding that the friend attempted to jump in but couldn’t spot Knittle in the water.

Hawaii police did not immediately respond to The Post’s question on whether any foul play is suspected in Knittle’s disappearance.

I used to work on a party (head) boat that did stand-up tuna fishing at the Hudson Canyon. The Captain would NOT allow customers to use harnesses. Gimbal belts were not only OK, but a necessity.

Have you ever seen the Cougar drag its prey back to its lair? Was it still alive at the time?

Sounds like he must have been- had the pole been loose- He coudla just let go- but i suppose the line coulda wrapped around him as he got yanked into the ocean and pulled him under too, or the fishing reel or hooks on the pole coulda snagged his clothing too- lot can go wrong-

He was heard to mutter, "From hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Ye damned tuna."

This can happen when you lock yourself to the rod but not the fighting seat.

One of the dangers of catching really powerful fish, like tuna and marlin, is they can run towards the boat early giving slack in the line. Tuna then love to dive down to the thermocline ( about 300ft) to colder water. If you get wrapped in the line when it comes toward the boat, then it dives, you’re dead.

“I’m not a big fisherman, but have fought a few tuna. An 80 lb tuna is a very powerful fish that will Kick Your Butt. I was never strapped in, but was close to letting go of the rod a couple of times. I don’t go into the ocean. It’s dangerous.”

Full grown tuna weigh 300 to 1000 pounds. You were fighting a baby. They are strong fish.

With Tina fishing comes the risk of the “tax collector”, as we call them around here.
Sharks!
Tuna put out a distress flutter as they are reeled in and this is a huge magnet to sharks. It isn’t at all uncommon to have the line get a huge hit, then you reel in a tuna head. Get them in the boat as soon as possible.

Not the time to fall overboard.

Right, makes sense. The charter fishing boats have fighting positions in the back where you insert the pole and don’t have to hold it.
