Mark Knittle of Captain Cook was fishing with a friend four miles off the coast of Hōnaunau on the Big Island when he hooked the ahi just before 5 a.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.
“The fish is huge,” Knittle reportedly said just before he was dragged overboard.
After witnessing Knittle plunge into the water, the friend tried to grab the line but missed.
The friend saw Knittle on the surface for a brief moment but disappeared “within seconds,” police said, adding that the friend attempted to jump in but couldn’t spot Knittle in the water.
Hawaii police did not immediately respond to The Post’s question on whether any foul play is suspected in Knittle’s disappearance.

Saw that too.
If one tries to jump in, gravity usually does the rest of the work, and then, you’re in.
Perhaps there was a local gravity anomaly that caused in to go up into the air instead of down into the water. You never know.
Portland International Jetport in Maine has 4-5 JAL 747 freighters lined up at 5AM waiting for the tuna boats to come in.
Wow! That has to suck. Could there have been a bigger fish following the tuna that decided the fisherman would do just as well for a snack? Or, did the tuna take take the man for a deep dive from which he couldn’t recover? Was he tethered to a pole so couldn’t release himself? I know nothing about tuna fishing, so have no idea.
Wherever tuna boats dock, eh?
The boat gad no fighting chair??
I’m not a big fisherman, but have fought a few tuna. An 80 lb tuna is a very powerful fish that will Kick Your Butt. I was never strapped in, but was close to letting go of the rod a couple of times. I don’t go into the ocean. It’s dangerous.
Was the tuna named Bruce?🤨
Tonight, Mark Knittle sleeps with da fishes. Give my regards to Lucca Brazzi.
“This makes NO sense whatsoever. You either jump in, or you don’t jump in. There’s NO in-between.’
He tried to jump in but missed.
Most likely tangle in line. Or, He was simply exhausted. I have fished like that. A big fish will take hour of fighting sometimes.

Unfortunately I am not close to a warm ocean.
Where I live there are nasty 98 lbs Cougars. they are not weaklings and can be aggressive
some are in the 120+ lbs range, those are the hard ones and them kicking your butt is the least of your worries.
We live next door to 135 lb cougar. She drives a Dodge Challenger.
Good Lord, they fill up that many jumbo jets with fish? Every day? Is that sustainable?
Those are house cats. Up here we often get them over 200lbs.
[[Or, did the tuna take take the man for a deep dive from which he couldn’t recover?]]
Probably the case- Tuna are extremely powerful swimmers- built for speed and power-
[[Was he tethered to a pole so couldn’t release himself?]]
Sounds like he must have been- had the pole been loose- He coudla just let go- but i suppose the line coulda wrapped around him as he got yanked into the ocean and pulled him under too, or the fishing reel or hooks on the pole coulda snagged his clothing too- lot can go wrong-
‘[[Is that sustainable?]]
authorities have it pretty well figured out- they likely determine how many there are approximately, and how many it woudl take to keep the species thriving, and base their limits on that- they monitor it pretty closely-
I remember a Monty Python skit like this ...
God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah and to save him from drowning. While in the belly of the big fish, Jonah prayed to God for help, repented, and praised God. For three days Jonah sat in the belly of the fish. Then, God had the big fish throw up Jonah onto the shores of Nineveh.
Jonah preached to Nineveh and warned them to repent before the city is destroyed in 40 days. The people believed Jonah, turned from their wickedness, and God had mercy on them.
We say the redundant “tuna fish” (what else is the tuna?) but as one comedian said “no one has ever seen a tuna fish.” They couldn’t hold a rod and reel.
