Dear Quentin, I find myself facing an issue that is rather complex, and I am not sure what to do. I live with two roommates, and during the pandemic we didn’t pay any utility bills thanks to a moratorium that allowed us to amass debt with no interest. We split the electric bill equally, but it’s in my name only.
The rub is that we are all moving out in February, and per our moratorium agreement, we’re not obligated to pay the bill until 2024. I’m concerned that one of my roommates will just drop communication when it comes time to pay, given that the bill is in my name.
One roommate ignored my requests for payment for other expenses for four months in a row this year. Their job situation is much better than it was then, but they never communicated or apologized for stiffing me. I made sacrifices and fronted the money, thinking they would eventually pay me back.
My roommates are younger than me, and I don’t want to hurt their credit by suing in small-claims court. I truly want to see them succeed despite how much they bother me personally. On the flip side, it would be nice not to have to pay their share of the $1,600 bill.

$1,600 is a cheap lesson.
It will be worth it for the rest of his life.
Pay the bill. The utilities will not go after anyone one. Ask your roomies to pay their shares as soon as possible. If there is no written agreement, don’t be surprised if one or both don’t. Seek counsel in the event if you think it will be worth it.
Yep. Best business school course in contracts. He gets a B+.
And sue the cheapskate roommates in small claims court. If they want to preserve their credit scores, they'll pay their share before getting a judgment against them.
Private property is private no more in Amerika.
One of my buddies had a house in another city (from a prior job). His disabled tenant of 6 years had always paid the rent until Covid. Despite no change to his lifestyle, my buddy had to pay the mortgage payment for two years because the tenant refused to pay because of “Covid”.
He could not evict him OR sell his house because he could not evict the guy.
This kind of unconstitutional nonsense needs to end.
There would be an easy solution if you were black, LGBT* (especially trans), or a criminal.
Thought experiment:
Isn’t it stupid to allow an 18-22 year old to rack up $200K in debt for a degree in Vaginal Studies?
Who should this “stupid” hurt?
” You have no grounds to sue anybody in small claims court unless you have a contract entered into with the roommates as signatories and it was duly signed, notarized, and witnessed. “
Oral agreements can be enforced and have been the bases for wins in court.
sounds like a Judge Judy show
“The uitilities will not go after anyone _else.”_
Regarding your roommates...
He *might* get sympathy from a judge but not a judgement.
If he can learn to refuse to make oral agreements he could save millions over his lifetime.
While technically they can be enforced it is difficult to do so and wiser to avoid that situation in the first place.

If someone is stupid enough to spend $200K for a worthless degree in vaginal studies, then it should be painful for the idiot.
That aside, the “Universities” offering said degree should be burned to the ground and the ashes scattered to the wind, figuratively speaking of course.
Without a written agreement that 'sympathy' would cost a lot... then again he could file his own small claims court suit - and maybe get a judgement that the deadbeats won't pay... Best to accept that good people always pay - (from the start) and people who offer excuses (for themselves) will always offer excuses.

Go ahead. Knock yourself out.
Should have cut it off. Cell phones work.
