Evel Knievel's son Robbie Knievel - who was also known as Kaptain Robbie Knievel - has died at the age 60.

The daredevil passed away after being in hospice following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

He took after his father's career as he was known for his death-defying motorcycle jumps, and racked up a total of 350 jumps over his lifetime.

Robbie started at a young age and had his father tutor him in the art of jumping a motorcycle over objects.

One of Robbie's most publicized stunts came in 2009 when he jumped over the man-made volcano in front of the Mirage Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

His dad Evel - who was a massive star in the 1970s and 1980s - died of pulmonary disease in Clearwater, Florida, in 2007, aged 69.

RIP -- Pancreatic Cancer is a silent killer until it's too late.

A question though. Did his dad prematurely pull the chute when he jumped the Snake River in his rocket or was it a malfunction?

Think I’ll see both of them in Heaven.

As I understand it survivability rate for pancreatic cancer is only around 5%.

A death sentence to be sure.

Same for Patrick Swayze and Michael Landon IIRC.

The Rifftrax of Evel’s 70s movie ‘Viva Knievel’ is one of their best. RIP to son.

Steve Jobs.. The list is endless. mRNA vaccines were developed for cancer and after a certain age would be the only type of mRNA vax I’d really go for.

Evel Knievel was a massive star in the 1970s. Almost as big as Elvis at one point.

Don't remember much about Robbie.

It's actually amazing that the two of them died of natural causes, despite all the death-defying stunts they pulled over the years.

“my neighbor was diagnosed just after Halloween. By Thanksgiving he was gone.
Brutal.”

Not trying to be calous but in a way I think that might have been a good thing.

I helplessly watched my mom suffer with cancer for months before she passed away in 1987.....after all these years it still seems so unfair. She was only 59.

Ditto that.

I had to watch my 18 y/o brother whither away over 11 months from Ewing Sarcoma. Once diagnosed, the doctors gave him 3 weeks to live but he fought it with guts, determination and faith. He had just graduated high school and accepted a football scholarship to UCLA. He went from 220 lbs. at his diagnosis to 95 lbs. when he finally succumbed to it.

It was the most devastating and heart wrenching thing I ever witnessed and still bothers me to this day 35 years later.

I don’t wish cancer upon anybody. Even the people I despise.

I’ve caught it a few times.

Not bad.

Catchy theme.

And whatever happened to 'Awful Knoffel" ?

Trivia: After a police chase in 1956, in which he crashed his motorcycle, Knievel was taken to jail on a charge of reckless driving. When the night jailer came around to check roll call, he noted Robert Knievel in one cell and William Knofel in another. Knofel was well known as “Awful Knofel” (“awful” rhyming with “Knofel”) so Knievel began to be referred to as Evel Knievel (“Evel” rhyming with “Knievel”). He chose this misspelling because of his last name and because he didn’t want to be considered “evil”.

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs was a dumb-ass. From his Wikipedia page:

In October 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with cancer. In mid-2004, he announced to his employees that he had a cancerous tumor in his pancreas. The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually very poor; Jobs stated that he had a rare, much less aggressive type, known as islet cell neuroendocrine tumor.

Jobs resisted his doctors' recommendations for medical intervention for nine months, in favor of alternative medicine. According to Harvard researcher Ramzi Amri, this "led to an unnecessarily early death". Other doctors agree that Jobs's diet was insufficient to address his disease. However, cancer researcher and alternative medicine critic David Gorski wrote that "it's impossible to know whether and by how much he might have decreased his chances of surviving his cancer through his flirtation with woo. My best guess was that Jobs probably only modestly decreased his chances of survival, if that." Barrie R. Cassileth, the chief of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's integrative medicine department, on the other hand, said, "Jobs's faith in alternative medicine likely cost him his life ... He had the only kind of pancreatic cancer that is treatable and curable ... He essentially committed suicide."

According to biographer Walter Isaacson, "for nine months he refused to undergo surgery for his pancreatic cancer – a decision he later regretted as his health declined". "Instead, he tried a vegan diet, acupuncture, herbal remedies, and other treatments he found online, and even consulted a psychic. He was also influenced by a doctor who ran a clinic that advised juice fasts, bowel cleansings and other unproven approaches, before finally having surgery in July 2004". He underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy (or "Whipple procedure") that appeared to remove the tumor successfully. Jobs did not receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

(((SNIP)))

Jobs died at his Palo Alto, California, home around 3 p.m. (PDT) on October 5, 2011, due to complications from a relapse of his previously treated islet-cell pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which resulted in respiratory arrest.

So Jobs died eight years from initial prognosis, and would have had much less problems and a much longer life if he wasn't an alternative voodoo medicine following dumb-ass.

Malfunction. The chute deploying early almost killed him, if he’d landed in the water that would have been it, there was no fast exit from that thing, especially not unaided.

That’s a good point. I remember watching it live on ABC’s Wide World Sports back then. We were glued to the TV set wondering if he’d land in the river below.
