NATIONAL PEACH MELBA DAY

Another dessert brought to us by an internationally famous chef, National Peach Melba Day offers a refreshing celebration on January 13th each year.

#PeachMelbaDay

French chef Auguste Escoffier invented the elegant dessert back in 1892 or 1893, depending on the source. He created the dessert with peaches, vanilla ice cream, and raspberry sauce while employed at the Savoy Hotel, London. The dessert honored Australian soprano, Nellie Melba. The chef was known for naming his creations after famous people. Three such recipes are celebrated on the calendar including National Melba Toast Day on March 23rd.

Nellie Melba was born Hellen Porter Mitchell. She took the stage name Melba in honor of her hometown of Melbourne. Her achievements as an opera singer took her on tour worldwide. Later, she earned the title of Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1927.

Chef Escoffier originally called the dessert “Pecheau Cygne” or “Peach Swan” and presented it in a swan-shaped ice sculpture and topped with spun sugar.

Peach Melba Day in the dead of winter, five months after the peak of tree-ripe peach season? Huh?

My grandmother’s middle name was Alberta. She was born in Alberta, but they grew peaches in British Columbia. I wonder if Alberta made Melba.

Peaches aren’t in season until summer. Why have the National Day for Peach Melba in January?? Someone must’ve been bored.

Then it would make some sense if we were in the Southern Hemisphere.

Peaches in British Columbia? Yikes. When I drive down I-95 to Florida I always stop at my aunt’s grave in Georgia and every damn thing there is named Peach or Peachtree.

The Southern Hemisphere has loquats, mouse melon, rambutan, durian, kiwano, custard apple, psidium, pitaya, passion fruit, jackfruit, and many other exotics.

But I don’t think they have plain old peaches.

Chilean peaches are available from November through March. They have a delicate aroma and a juicy, yellowish pulp.

I’ve seen many fruits from Chile, but never Chilean peaches. They are probably picked green and hard to transport, anyway.

Once you’ve had tree-ripe peaches right in the orchard, it’s hard to eat the baseball-hard ones.

They make it with canned peaches?

Del Monte had Melba peach halves coming off of the first two lines of 14 at the cannery where I worked. Most peaches were the ones that were left from sorting out all the bad ones but Melba halves were the largest ones through the screening process and the best ones were pulled out for the Melba cans. Whatever wasn’t picked for halves was sorted and re-sorted until the worst went into the big institutional can.

I can tell you from experience that the best food out of the cannery is the brand that owns the cannery. They put the biggest best halves in heavy syrup. The squishy slices were packed in light syrup or fruit juice.
