They don’t always get the full top. Plus when you give cash they don’t have to claim it on their taxes.

Shouldn’t this be in the “Breaking” sidebar?

Their taxes are their business, not mine.

Shouldn’t this be in the “Breaking” sidebar? It depends, was this a "Florida" man?

My all-time favorite is the bellman at the hotel who carries your bags from the lobby to your room. He shows you how to open the drapes, how to turn on the TV, and how to run the thermostat and stands there with his hand out, hemming and hawing, refusing to leave, clears his throat, shoves his hand out further, shifts his weight back and forth, mutters something. You have to pay him to leave.

I stopped going to Subway after the clerk accosted the guy in front of me for not tipping. I stopped going after that awful Megan Rapinoe (the purple-haired dude) started promoting them. Plus, the quality of their food had gone down.
But yeah, that would have done it too. A tip at a fast-food sandwich store??

One of my employers tips us ... calls it “Show up Pay” for “Lack of Work”.
6% of my pay falls in this category

“carry my own bags.”
Me, too. Their performances always irked me. On business travel, I usually had a small overnight bag and there was no reason to have them handle it. On personal travel (and now retired), I’m a cheapskate.
I probably have the only wife in the USA who can pack LESS stuff than I do.

When you tip in a sit-down restaurant, you are tipping the kitchen staff also. The waiter or waitress give a portion of tips they have received to the kitchen staff at the end of their shift. I usually give a small tip on a takeout order since I’d end up tipping the cooks if I ate in a restaurant.

Personally, I don’t see the $16 and $17 here as “crap”.

I am not tipping for take out, and don’t care whether they like it or not. That is ridiculous. I have to leave my house to go get it and I am supposed to tip? For what? If I go in and have a sit down meal, I tip, but I am not tipping for ordering and picking up food. What’s next? Tipping the cashier at Kroger? If a person can’t make enough money working in food service, then get an education and a better job. I did.

Table service workers can be paid as little as $2.13 by their employer if their tips add up to at least $5.12 an hour. They spend 10 or 20 minutes per customer and deserve a tip.
Counter service? A couple of minutes per customer while their getting paid at least $7.25 an hour, and at least $15/hour in a lot of states. If they get 15% of a typical hour’s take they’re raking in $30-$40 an hour.
Tips for counter service is a scam.
