Background Monitoring safety outcomes following COVID-19 vaccination is critical for understanding vaccine safety especially when used in key populations such as elderly persons age 65 years and older who can benefit greatly from vaccination. We present new findings from a nationally representative early warning system that may expand the safety knowledge base to further public trust and inform decision making on vaccine safety by government agencies, healthcare providers, interested stakeholders, and the public.
Methods We evaluated 14 outcomes of interest following COVID-19 vaccination using the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) data covering 30,712,101 elderly persons. The CMS data from December 11, 2020 through Jan 15, 2022 included 17,411,342 COVID-19 vaccinees who received a total of 34,639,937 doses. We conducted weekly sequential testing and generated rate ratios (RR) of observed outcome rates compared to historical (or expected) rates prior to COVID-19 vaccination.
Findings
Four outcomes met the threshold for a statistical signal following BNT162b2 vaccination including pulmonary embolism (PE; RR = 1.54), acute myocardial infarction (AMI; RR = 1.42), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC; RR = 1.91), and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP; RR = 1.44). After further evaluation, only the RR for PE still met the statistical threshold for a signal; however, the RRs for AMI, DIC, and ITP no longer did. No statistical signals were identified following vaccination with either the mRNA-1273 or Ad26 COV2.S vaccines.
Interpretation
This early warning system is the first to identify temporal associations for PE, AMI, DIC, and ITP following BNT162b2 vaccination in the elderly. Because an early warning system does not prove that the vaccines cause these outcomes, more robust epidemiologic studies with adjustment for confounding, including age and nursing home residency, are underway to further evaluate these signals. FDA strongly believes the potential benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweigh the potential risks of COVID-19 infection.

Sadly, my husband passed away in October e both got the first two shots Moderna as he was immune compromised and he was a believer in the shots. I did it for him (if I got COVID and didn’t get the shots and I caused him to die, I would have had guilt) So I did. We never got COVID. I found in his wallet that he got the first booster in May 22. 2nd one in October 8 days before he died. Both were Pfzier not Moderna, not sure why they changed it. He had a healthy heart. Had left kidney out in Jan 22 due to tumor in bad spot in kidney. He was discharged next day, surgeon was blown away how well he did.
He went to a little produce store that morning and said I’ll be back. I said ok see you later. He collapsed in store, only two people there no one knew how to do CPR. Ambulance arrived 6min. They did LUCAS MACHINE on him, no pulse, heart beat, nothing for 20min. Dead. Transported to ER and they worked on him and still no heart beat or pulse. They thought it was heart attack but now we know it was a PE.
He believed in the shots, tried to tell him don’t do it. He didn’t listen. I got the call he died went to hospital. I;m devasted, 38 years married, anniversary this month. We were going to Florida in Feb for 9 days as he has had health issues for last 3 years. I retired early to spend the last 3 years with him (he’d been forced medically to retire 10 years ago)
We thought we were finally home free with his health issues and he was doing good since his kidney removal. Sadly not the case.
He was 64. I did get the video from the store. He was fine, got up to counter, put his card in machine and then just collapsed. Dr said he died instantly.
Oh geesh, so sorry for your loss. This is a very heart breaking thing that has happened to you. It hasn’t been long for you and the pain is still pretty fresh.

Yes. I watched died suddenly video on Rumble. My husband got two shots and two boosters, 2nd one 8 days before he died instantly in a store in October. I obtained the video he was perfectly fine, waiting in line, with two other folks. He just collapsed. We found out it was a PE. He had two spinal fusions last few years, recovered very well and then left kidney out Jan 22 due to a cancerous tumor near the main artery, had to go. Surgery on a Monday, discharged next morning. Surgeon said he was incredible with recovery. Passed all heart tests, etc for the last 10 years, had a healthy heart. Dies from a PE from 2nd booster, I believe. I refused the boosters. He believed in them, said I’ll die if I get COVID. We never got it, but he was afraid and went ahead (unknown to me, I found his vax card in his wallet). I just cried and cried. 38 years of marriage and now I’m a widow.
Thank you, sorry for your loss too. I’m at acceptance phase, have good days and bad days but hanging in there. God has prepared me for this, unbeknownst to me this past 3yearsI didn’t see it then but I do now. God nudged me to retire at 59 vs. 62. Two months he told me to retire, I did and so glad that I had the last 3 years with him. I’m grateful he didn’t get in the car out of the store and drive and die, killing someone else. I’m glad he didn’t die here in front of me, or when I wasn’t here and come home and find him. I’m grateful he is no longer suffering with severe back pain, not sleeping *he slept in a lazy boy for last two years due to rib and back pain. He also had 60 skin cancer surgeries over last 3 years, almost died from hypercalcemia, etc.
Day after he died, he showed up as a deer on our street (we live in the city) and it just stood in front of our house looking at me then ran). That same day heading to funeral home, goose came out of weeds and stood on the street and just looked at me. He was a big deer and goose hunter. He was telling me, I;m ok— a last goodbye. I find comfort in those two things, that had to be him.
Thank you- God is getting me through it all, my kids, grand-kids, my friends and his mom and my sister in laws, have surrounded me with love and support. I’m blessed. It is now making a life as a new normal, not a we or an us, but a me. Walking it out-God has a plan for me.

Sounds like you are handling it the best you can. It is hard to be suddenly alone and dealing with all that goes with it including the grief.
Your story about the deer and the goose was quite similar to something that touched me like that.
