The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time
Rolling Stone magazine ^ | Rolling Stone

Posted on 01/07/2023 4:42:12 AM PST by DallasBiff

Aretha Franklin described her mission as a singer like this: “Me with my hand outstretched, hoping someone will take it.” That kind of deep, empathetic bond between artist and listener is the most elemental connection in music. And you can think of our list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time as a celebration of that bond. These are the vocalists that have shaped history and defined our lives — from smooth operators to raw shouters, from gospel to punk, from Sinatra to Selena to SZA

Wokeism and slavish obedience to political correctness, not quality, are behind most of the selections.

THIS.

I agree, to a point. I think Steve Perry had a truly great voice....he had a voice like a bell.

You got that right. The list is laughable.

Do they mean "singers" as vocalists, or "singers" as performers.

There's a big difference - Bob Dylan, great song writer but had a lousy voice.

If they mean pure vocal talent, I think you'd have to start with Elvis Pressley and maybe Judy Collins.

Dittos on Sinatra

My top choices based on true, pure singing & phrasing...
Frank Sinatra
Nat King Cole
Linda Ronstadt
Karen Carpenter
Patsy Cline
Dusty Springfield

I’m blessed to have been gifted from an iconic mastering engineer CDRs of Sinatra & NKC burned direct from the master tapes. Many are “dry” before the dreaded reverb was added and some have studio chatter - incredible sound quality and the “dry” versions sound so lifelike as in “right there”.

(Almost every comment I’ve made since yesterday has been a double-post - don’t know why, but I haven’t lost my mind. I think.

Yes on Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt. I’ve always loved Annie Lennox’s voice too. And of course Aretha and Whitney Houston.

I didn’t mean all of them. Some of that 200 really do have great voices. There are also categories for great voices.

Some of those people may have a unique voice that works on certain songs, but if they get out of the range where their voice works, they can stink.

For instance, Kelly Clarkson has a great voice and it is a versatile voice. She can sing songs I do not like, but she still has a great voice.

Can't believe they actually said Axl Rose had a good voice.

I've mixed him on live gigs and completely agree!

I went through TOO fast. SoI missed it. I have a Christmas album of hers and listening to 'Go Tell it On the Mountain' makes the hair on my neck stand up.

A friend of our family said he saw her in person in N. Africa, during WWII, when they finally got some USO

He said the other performers finished and the orchestra was clearing off the stage.

In the night, in the middle of the desert, she came out and began to sing...without an orchestra. He said ‘You could hear a pin drop.”

None of the white soldiers knew who she was but all the black troops did. It was a remarkable experience!

This is dumb. Music is 100% subjective. There is no such thing as a “best”.
