They can do an EEG. I think the MRI with dye (fMRI) is most common, but uses blood flow as a proxy for brain activity. The EEG makes a direct measurement of neural activity. I am just not sure how much the artificial coma condition affects the ability to detect normal function.

Since he’s in ICU they can’t do a brain scan in a MRI.............. Is there a reason they cannot do an EEG in intensive care? They're commonly used to determine brain death.
Once Damar Hamlin's off oxygen, they can also check the gag reflex to determine brain health/death.

I've taken maybe hundreds of people to get CT's and MRI's while they are intubated/or trached.
