MIAMI — A South Florida man has been cited after his dog was dyed to look Pikachu from the "Pokémon" franchise during a Miami Heat game last week.

"It's made NBA history because nobody's ever seen a Pikachu dog sitting next to an NBA player before," owner Erik Torres told NBC affiliate WTVJ.

But the Pomeranian's fur color had already caught the attention of Miami-Dade County Animal Services during an inspection at Torres' Doral puppy store last month.

"Pikachu was in the store," Miami-Dade County Animal Services Assistant Director Kathleen Labrada said. "There was a staff member holding the dog in her lap. We obtained a photograph at that time."

Labrada told WTVJ that it is "unlawful for any person to possess, sell or otherwise transfer within the county any dyed or artificially colored rabbit or other animal."

A few days later, Torres was told Miami-Dade County Animal Services would be issuing a citation.

"No animal should be dyed, regardless of whether there's an ordinance prohibiting that or not," Labrada said. "You don't really have any guarantee or any assurance that the chemicals they're putting onto your pet are safe."

This is a joke, right?

All the other dogs - being color blind - are confused.

…that it is “unlawful for any person to possess, sell or otherwise transfer within the county any dyed or artificially colored rabbit or other animal.”

There is a law against this, somewhere in the US?

Crazy!

So glad they don’t have serious issues to address.

“All the other dogs - being color blind - are confused.”

Is everything in a dog’s world black and white? That idea that dogs can’t see color was widely accepted for decades, but new research and conclusions about canine anatomy and behavior have shown that while dogs can’t see the same colors humans do, dogs can still see some colors.

This is true. I had a Yellow Lab who could see orange. That is a valuable trait in hunt test dogs . . . to the point that it's being selectively bred for.

She would spot the orange stake marking the blind bird from 50-75 yards and head straight for it. Judges remarked on it more than once.

But kids having their hair dyed with the same chemicals is A-OK.

Kathleen Labrada is a fool.

I suspect she has dye in her hair, If not, she is one of the very few women who do not.

On second thought, maybe this is a good idea. I could us the law to seize a good locking woman from the evil persons housing her, for her own protection of course.

Bought boobs not eligible.

Theoretically, you should be able to dye a dog with Kool-Aid powder mixed in water. Unsweetened, of course.

He could just use Kool-Aid. It’s not a dye, it’s a food product.

OK, when are they going to start arresting about 500 female celebrities who have their little fru-fru purse dogs died to match their outfits?

I'll tell my friend who bred and handled this Standard Poodle to stay the heck out of Miami.

Mega-Millions Rapper Aunt Edith (and Maisie the pink poodle)

Maisie ran a hunting test while still in her full pink glory (the dye has to wear off/grow out). She passed!

I will be interested to know if they can make it stick

This probably conflicts with the 1st amendment, but depending on the judge ?

it looks like the dog enjoys all the extra attention it gets, unlike the nasty ankle biters of that breed.

I can understand the “rabbit” part, because people used to sell dyed rabbit foot keychains (I bought one in Florida in fact as a kid). So people were probably raising and dying rabbits just to chop their feet off and someone probably thought that was a little cruel and passed a law against it.

How it would get extended to all other animals is a mystery though.

I see no problem with this. It's his pet, it isn't hurting the animal, why do I care?
