Commentary: It’s Okay to Aim Lower With Your New Year’s Exercise Resolutions

Is five minutes of exercise a day enough? If a big commitment is daunting, there’s good news for those who prefer to start small, says this professor.

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to exercise more. Many of us set ambitious goals requiring a big, regular commitment, but then abandon them because they’re too much to fit in. Plans to exercise more in the new year are often broken within a month.

So how can we exercise more regularly in the new year? If the aim is to build long-term fitness and health, the exercise must be sustainable. It may be achievable to resolve to do an extra few minutes of muscle-strengthening exercises every day.

Our research suggests even one muscle contraction a day, for five days a week, can improve muscle strength if you keep it up for a month.

I can’t think of any jokes right now but others may have some. Bookmarked.

I see where you are attempting to steer this thread, Pun not originally intended. I don’t think steers are capable of the exercise you intended. No bull.

"Is five minutes of exercise a day enough? "

It's certainly better than NO exercise a day. When I started exercising, some 35 odd years ago, badly overweight and unfit, I could barely make a 5-minute walk. But that's how I started. After just a few days, I felt a whole lot better, and started increasing it. Now some 35 years and -75 pounds later, I get a good cardio workout every day. It makes me feel good, really-really good.

At 68, I’m lucky to manage one “muscle contraction” a month total!

I need Viagra+ or Viagra 2.0 or something!

This is very good advice. I started exercising with weights, 10 reps, then one month later 15, then 20. Do 20 reps of 2 exercises - one like swinging an axe, and then a roller for my abs. Now do each 20 times, takes 3 minutes a morning before my walk. 65 years old flat stomach, ripped shoulders.

Your weight loss goals should be set low. Figure 5 lbs for the first month and increase it each month afterwards.

The weight doesn’t come off all at once. Start out easy and slowly increase the intensity each week.

ah, so this is how they begin to cloak exercise as razist just write that it’s not all that necessary

Twitter flames TIME article for calling exercise racist: ‘So goofy I consider it satire’ (recent Fox article)

Just order a pizza and watch a tape on exercising. That’ll lower your standards.
