Sideburns, Mustaches, Mutton Chops? Facial Hair Of The '60s & '70s
Groovy History ^ | 12/8/17 | Rebeka Knott

In the 1960s and '70s, facial hair -- including mustaches, sideburns, goatees, Van Dykes, soul patches, mutton or lamb chops and other creative topiary -- was a means of free expression and identity. The 1950s had been an era of extreme clean-shavenness; in movies of the time, a 5 o'clock shadow was a visual shorthand for intoxication or derangement. As young men threw off the shackles of conformity, they began experimenting with facial hair. From the beatniks' goatees and Van Dykes to full hippie beards, and then into the '70s with massive sideburns and pimp-ish mustaches. If you could grow it on your face, you had free rein to do so.

A long beard was inconvenient at work, even hazardous, so for decades I kept it around two inches or so, though I always wanted to grow a big Civil War general type beard. About a year ago I had the thing about to the bottom of my sternum, but it was such a hassle I went back to keeping it short.

Think George Carlin in a business suit in the 50’s and 60’s vs his later look of a long haired hippie.

Interesting that in 1800-1820, facial hair on men was considered lower class and avoided at all costs.

That changed over the next two decades, so that by 1850 or so, only two members of Parliament did NOT have facial hair.

Has anyone seen a clean shaven person on tv in the last year or so? Now there are ads with bearded gays kissing each other, selling some sort of HIV prevention drug. The trend is toward the gang-banger/homeless look.

Last week I trimmed my bushy beard with a #4 comb on my Wahl clippers.   Because the barber shop I went to in the past required a mask, I have hair growing about four inches below my collar.

I bragged many times through the years that I would just let my hair and beard grow when I retired.   On the first date with my wife in 1974, I had my hair about as long as it is now.   LOL   The baldness on top certainly makes a difference though.

I don't imagine ever being clean shaven again.

I didn't even know the pejorative "neck beard" was a thing until recently.

Only Toshiro Mifune can rock a Man Bun. They should be prohibited by law for anyone else.

He could rock any look he wanted.

Toshiro Mifune as Yojimbo.   This picture from the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

I’ve had a mustache since I was in high school. I am now 71. Had a beard off and on up until around 1983 when I decided to keep it permanently. I retired as Covid started and just stopped trimming the beard except for shape. I now have a “Santa” beard and pose for Santa pictures at Christmas for my photographer daughter. If I ever shaved, no one would recognize me. LOL.

I’ve worn a closely trimmed full beard since 1969. I’m red haired (or was) and gingers’ beards are a wiry sort of growth. Shaving that twice a day left my face in ruins so I gave up.

Oddly all facial acne disappeared once the beard got established. Either the hair kept my face clean or not carving it up with a razor every day let it heal.

More than clean shaven. I don’t know how they get that look.
