Worker killed on ramp at Alabama airport in airplane incident

A worker was fatally injured on the ramp at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama where an American Airlines regional carrier flight was parked, the Federal Aviation Administration said Saturday.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident that occurred where American Airlines Flight 3408, an Embraer E175, was parked at the gate after arriving from Dallas. The FAA said the airport was closed after the incident.

Two people briefed on the matter said the initial investigation indicates the employee was killed in an accident involving one of the airplane’s engines that was running.

While it’s easy to make fun of these guys, try working on the Flight Line, where your ears are plugged and all you hear are engine and APU sounds all day long.
(I did that years ago)

The Flightdeck Crewman was saved because a strap on his vest got caught on the intake and kept him from being ingested by the fan blade.

When I was in the Navy, we had a guy get sucked into a Tomcat engine on the flight deck… Fortunately, the pilot had stopped the plane, and saw the guy go in and shut the engine down immediately. The guy lived, but he was a quadriplegic I was told. I saw the engine after they removed it, and it was a mess… The tools had come out of his toolbelt and gone through the engine and out the side of the engine, taking blades with it

It was a tragic mishap and I apologize for making light of it. But it is surprising to me that more people do not get killed on the flight line of airports with giant machinery rolling around and giant engines capable of sucking people into them nearby.
