Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A diamond engagement ring accidentally flushed down the toilet of a Florida home was returned to its owners after being found lodged inside the commode 21 years later.
Nick and Shaina Day said they weren't yet married when the ring went down the toilet 21 years ago at Nick's parents' house.
"She came to me one day and said, 'I think I lost my ring.' She said, 'It was on the counter now it's gone and I think I may have flushed it down the toilet on accident,'" Nick Day told WFLA-TV.
Shaina said she had been wiping around the sink.
"I was cleaning water off the counter with some toilet paper. My ring was sitting on the counter. I must have grabbed my ring by accident and tossed the tp. It was one of the worst things I ever did," she wrote on Facebook.
The couple said they went to great lengths to try to find the lost ring.
"I climbed down into the septic tank so we could pump every bit of it through a strainer to try to find it. No luck," Shaina Day said.
Nick's parents said a plumber was replacing their toilet last month when he found the ring lodged inside.
The ring was returned to the couple on Christmas Day.
"They brought this out. It was wrapped up in a little Christmas bag so we opened it up and both of us knew exactly what it was," Nick recalled.
The couple said they learned a lesson from the experience.
"Check your toilets when you lose things," Nick said.

Holy chit!
one of my aunts lost her dentures upper plate in a toilet when she sneezed as she flushed it....................
Still married after 21 years, and after that!
Love it.
Along the lines of Shawshank..only real life..
Usually in insurance rings are items on a schedule and no questions asked if lost. My insurance agent fired an employee, she called in a claim the next day, $20,000 ring flushed down the toilet.
Great God is Good! Story!
It wouldn’t have been in the toilet but instead must have stuck to the wax ring sealing the toilet to the closet flange.
43 years.......................
EGADS!! Shaina is lucky she didn't die from asphyxiation! And why would you do THAT before pulling the toilet to check it?
That ring certainly has some stories to tell. It's seen, smelled, and heard a LOT.
So, the big unanswered question — is she going to wear it?
Really. “Honey, I have some bad news.”
“You WHAT???”
The ring was returned to the couple on Christmas Day.
. It’s also gross.
Think of the worst things in the world to do, and there’s someone who doesn’t think that it’s as bad, and they’re better at it than you are. Pay them.
In college, a pair of prescription sunglasses fell out of my shirt pocket as I bent down to flush the toilet. They were gone before I could even process what happened.
Sleeping With The Enemy.
(I mean how stupid do you have to be to try to fake your own death and then try to flush the ring down to toilet)
Some septic tanks have totally removable tops, so it’s not dangerous.....................
The snake went in, but wouldn't come out because of the curves in the plumbing.
I had to cut off the head of the snake and put the other end into a drill and screw the end out.
I can see why things that go down there, stay down there.
Those keys are either still there or have since been pumped out and sent to a "better place".
