Lost engagement ring found in toilet 21 years later

Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A diamond engagement ring accidentally flushed down the toilet of a Florida home was returned to its owners after being found lodged inside the commode 21 years later.

Nick and Shaina Day said they weren't yet married when the ring went down the toilet 21 years ago at Nick's parents' house.

"She came to me one day and said, 'I think I lost my ring.' She said, 'It was on the counter now it's gone and I think I may have flushed it down the toilet on accident,'" Nick Day told WFLA-TV.

Shaina said she had been wiping around the sink.

"I was cleaning water off the counter with some toilet paper. My ring was sitting on the counter. I must have grabbed my ring by accident and tossed the tp. It was one of the worst things I ever did," she wrote on Facebook.

The couple said they went to great lengths to try to find the lost ring.

"I climbed down into the septic tank so we could pump every bit of it through a strainer to try to find it. No luck," Shaina Day said.

Nick's parents said a plumber was replacing their toilet last month when he found the ring lodged inside.

The ring was returned to the couple on Christmas Day.

"They brought this out. It was wrapped up in a little Christmas bag so we opened it up and both of us knew exactly what it was," Nick recalled.

The couple said they learned a lesson from the experience.

"Check your toilets when you lose things," Nick said.

The only time I’ve taken off my ring is when I was in surgery.

You had to have the ring surgically removed?

That's how I got rid of my ring. Getting rid of the wife was quite another thing.

(Just kidding.)

Temporarily lost mine two months after the wedding (8-12-78) while leveling a load of corn by hand. The corn dust is slippery, almost like graphite powder. Got a scrap piece of 1/2” wire mesh and had my brother slowly scoop corn in it while I held it. About 10 bushels later I found it. Wife said to leave it in the house unless we were going somewhere.

Two years later she stopped wearing hers to avoid scratching our 1st newborn. Two years after that, the farm economy the Carter left to Reagan had us struggling. Yep, we sold our rings, thinking if things improve we’ll get nicer ones.

We got so used to not wearing them we never did replace them. Wife said, “God knows we’re married, we know we’re married, people we know know we’re married, the goverment knows we’re married. Nobody else knows or cares.” She’s an awesome wife.

Maybe better to pawn that “toilet ring” and buy another piece of jewelry, fresh and clean, worthy of touching with one’s bare skin.

I assure you that one of the hardest substances on earth, diamond, can be soaked in bleach and boiled in water, along with its gold or platinum setting, and suffer no ill effects. It will emerge completely clean and sanitized.

You're really lucky. So is she.

They may have been “flush with excitement “ or perhaps just flush with excrement?

Thanks,
I should add that after deciding to leave it in the house while working, I told her of a classmate that (the summer before his senior year) jumped off a moving hayrack, catching his class ring on a protruding nail, which removed his ring finger.

That story sealed it for her: no ring while working!

It was not a good idea to wear rings on the job I retired from. I had a coworker who was missing that finger because his wedding ring got caught and stripped all the flesh off the finger. Tried keeping my ring in my pocket while I was at work, but nearly lost it a few times, so I left it home after that.

Even now that I’m retired, I’m not in the habit of wearing my wedding ring. As you say, anyone who needs to know I’m married already does.

Ha! You posted while I was typing. The guy at my workplace lost his finger when he fell getting off a dozer and his ring caught on the handrail. I have heard of several similar incidents over the years.

Not as personal, of course, but talk to any cell-phone call-center agent about how times they’ve heard from some freaked out guy who just bent over to flush the toilet, and - PLOOP! - flushed his brand new iPhone that he had parked in his shirt pocket. It happens ... frequently.

My hearing aid fell into the toilet one time but I retrieved it before it was damaged. Even though I got them from the VA, they are $2500 hearing aids!.............

My Guardian Angel has grey hair and a nervous twitch . . .

It takes both him and St. Anthony of Padua to keep me in line.

Mine is a really big guy with muscles, scars and tattoos - I have really given him a workout over the years!

Probably should have brought St. Antony in a couple of times too..

People think that all St. Anthony does is find lost car keys . . . they forget that when he was preaching, his bye-name was "Hammer of Heretics"!

My friend works around electricity, so he doesn't wear a wedding ring. Instead, he had his wife's initial tattooed there.

I knew a mechanic who had some very ugly burn scars on his ring finger resulting from shorting something with his wedding ring.

The tattoo’s not a bad idea, as long as you don’t divorce and then get married to a woman with a different initial. Knew a guy who had SUE tattooed on his wrist, but I don’t think his wife Marlene cared much for that.
