Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A diamond engagement ring accidentally flushed down the toilet of a Florida home was returned to its owners after being found lodged inside the commode 21 years later.
Nick and Shaina Day said they weren't yet married when the ring went down the toilet 21 years ago at Nick's parents' house.
"She came to me one day and said, 'I think I lost my ring.' She said, 'It was on the counter now it's gone and I think I may have flushed it down the toilet on accident,'" Nick Day told WFLA-TV.
Shaina said she had been wiping around the sink.
"I was cleaning water off the counter with some toilet paper. My ring was sitting on the counter. I must have grabbed my ring by accident and tossed the tp. It was one of the worst things I ever did," she wrote on Facebook.
The couple said they went to great lengths to try to find the lost ring.
"I climbed down into the septic tank so we could pump every bit of it through a strainer to try to find it. No luck," Shaina Day said.
Nick's parents said a plumber was replacing their toilet last month when he found the ring lodged inside.
The ring was returned to the couple on Christmas Day.
"They brought this out. It was wrapped up in a little Christmas bag so we opened it up and both of us knew exactly what it was," Nick recalled.
The couple said they learned a lesson from the experience.
"Check your toilets when you lose things," Nick said.

I didn’t know that. We had an old concrete one in our backyard with a manhole in top for access.
Sounds like you had a modern one!
We had an outhouse!.....................
(The couple said they learned a lesson from the experience.)
Yeah. Stop cleaning all the time. 🤣
Reminds me of that old story about the guy who lost his sunglasses in one of those pit toilets, so he took off his Rolex and tossed it in. When his friend asked him why he did that, he said, “Well, I’m sure not going in there after a lousy pair of sunglasses!”
“I climbed down into the septic tank so we could pump every bit of it through a strainer to try to find it.
That’s dedication.

That’s defe.... aw skip it.
14 years married and nine kids here!
She was very upset, so I expanded the search to include everywhere we had been that day and just as the sun was on the horizon, spotted a flash in the parking lot where she had parked her car to attend an award ceremony and that was her ring!
Been married close to 25 years now and she wears it ever day.
I think I would have pulled up the toilet first. It’s not that hard to do.
Does she even want it back at all, considering where the ring has been all this time? Maybe better to pawn that “toilet ring” and buy another piece of jewelry, fresh and clean, worthy of touching with one’s bare skin.
Would be in perfect condition, just need cleaning a little and rinse in pure alcohol, good as new................
Make a fork or spoon out of it?
No. I’ve done it a number of times. It’s quite easy.
seems their relationship has endured a lot of crap over the years
My wife takes her rings off and leaves them laying on counters. It drives me nuts. The only time I’ve taken off my ring is when I was in surgery.
i bet they were flush with excitement!...................
He walked into the laundry room, said, "There it is," leaned over and picked it up and handed it to me.
We immediately headed out to the jeweler to have the four-prong setting changed to a six-prong.
Sure do miss that man! He was not only sharp-eyed (20/15 vision) he was lucky!
Sometimes our Guardian Angels work overtime! Sure glad he found it...
It’s a brown diamond now
When looking for something tiny on the floor, hold a flashlight a couple of inches above and horizontally to the floor and look for something casting a tiny shadow.
Like reusable body parts, it is washable, even more so.
