This is the worst part of the Thanksgiving and Christmas, I blame the entertainment industry for a lot of this you have to be home for XMAS and Thanksgiving crap. It is been pushed and ingrained in us since silent movies, books, and radio shows going back well over 100 years. How many people have died trying to get to Grandma’s for a reason that could have waited a little longer with common sense?
It is the same old story, Emotion trips common sense almost every time.
This portion of the turnpike runs right along Lake Erie.
When the Lake Erie snow machine kicks in, traveling becomes deadly.
That is usually a pleasant piece of highway to drive. Flat, decent road, usually not too much traffic. Tolls are expensive, rest stops are well-appointed. I think I’ll stay in Phoenix this Christmas.
Stay at home! It’s going to be a major storm! Black ice is impossible to see, the news readers explained time and time again. Visibility will be zero they intoned.
People have heard the media “cry wolf” many times only for nothing to happen. No one trusts the media anymore. This is the result. However, use your senses and especially your common sense. It’s friggin cold outside. Everything is frozen solid, including the road-ways!
I understand family members will be disappointed, but now many are going to be devastated as they make funeral arrangements instead of cooking that ham or turkey they have thawing in the fridge.
Folks! Stay at home. It’s just two or three more days and then we return to normal winter. Your life and the life of your loved ones is not worth making sure little Canilmorxia has the new I-phone she/he/it has been begging for. Four year-olds get over it and are just as happy to get it a few days late.
Prayers!!!!
It’s always, ALWAYS, a few aholes who just have to drive 15 or 20 mph faster than everyone else that cause crap like this. Tailgating the entire time.
It’s amazing how people jump on the bandwagon and condemn. Actually it’s pretty disgusting. None of the people commenting know the circumstance but by god, those involved in this accident ‘had it coming to them’ for being so stupid as to travel during this period of time.
Four dead in Ohio.
Sympathy for their families.
All the Apps can’t force idiots to plan ahead
daughter, wife and I all made an extra effort Thursday to avoid the weather in Ohio....could have been us...in a way (though not this stretch)...I ended up putting in 8 hours behind the wheel to avoid this Thursday. So glad we all preplanned. Prayers for those impacted.
Learning to drive under wintry conditions as well. If you have to drive 20mph and start stopping a milevaway, do that.
Wednesday, on a dry highway with miles of visibility and no precipitation, for no apparent reason, both I70 W/E had multiple severe crashes.
I couldn’t even get out of my lane until 9PM due to people detouring to avoid the shut down interstates by using RT 40.
It’s as if everyone driving that day/night collectively lost their marbles all at once.
No one working the rescue crews can even begin to explain it.
Mass craziness.
They were warned, but were probably of the *they always exaggerate. It’s just another winter storm. A big nothing burger based on fear mongering* types like we have on FR, so they stupidly ventured out in the storm and unprepared for it.
It always amazes me how people continue to drive at or over the speed limit when the roads are covered with snow.
Especially 18 wheelers. I know they sometimes have a time schedule they have to meet to get paid enough to continue working and paying for their rig, but 70 MPH on snow covered rods is practically suicidal.
Today's 4wd SUV's and trucks give a false sense of security in these conditions and are always the ones starting these chain collisions. I've driven under these conditions on freeways and at times 30 mph felt like I was going too fast for the conditions with vehicles flying by me. And invariably, I'd be passing trucks and suv's that had spun off the road and were stuck in snow banks and ditches.
Sad news, but hardly a surprise that this happened.
Weather will be better on Christmas day in most of the country. Can always celebrate with family later next week.
If I had a flight scheduled during this weather event, I wouldn’t have even gone to the airport. Can always visit some other time.
