Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, turnpike personnel and first responders from several agencies remain on the scene hours after a multi-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike left four dead and many injured Friday afternoon.
As of 9:10 p.m., 15 commercial vehicles are being cleared from the roadway. The crash happened eastbound between State Route 53 and State Route 4 in Sandusky County and eventually stretched into Erie County.
Forty-six vehicles were involved in the crash, according to OSHP Sgt. Ryan Purpura. At least three of the four victims were in different vehicles, and none of their identities have been released.
Officials have gone through the scene and are finishing a second sweep while removing cars, Purpura said.
The exact number of injuries has not yet been determined.
The turnpike remains closed in the area of the crash and officials are uncertain of when it may reopen.
Weather factored into the crash, OSHP confirmed. Everyone involved in the crash has been bussed to a facility to stay warm in the frigid temperatures.
The rescue effort has continued through white-out conditions.
Because the Ohio Turnpike is closed in both directions, eastbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 91 at State Route 53. Westbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 118 at State Route 250.

It’s always, ALWAYS, a few aholes who just have to drive 15 or 20 mph faster than everyone else that cause crap like this. Tailgating the entire time.
Yup. People drive like animals these days I don’t understand it.
It’s amazing how people jump on the bandwagon and condemn. Actually it’s pretty disgusting. None of the people commenting know the circumstance but by god, those involved in this accident ‘had it coming to them’ for being so stupid as to travel during this period of time.
Amen! The non negro pilot decided his life was worth $1000!
Oh right not one bit of that is true.
Bless your tiny, little heart.
Four dead in Ohio.
Sympathy for their families.
All the Apps can’t force idiots to plan ahead
Another meteor impact to multi-generational family life is the Demonrat socialist security program. For most of history, and still in most of the world, 5 to 7 children were needed to be the parent's social security/medicare/nursing home providers. Some of the giant houses of that era still exist. Children were raised to their fullest potential, and were kept away from communists, hippies, druggies, perverts, and other Demonrats.
daughter, wife and I all made an extra effort Thursday to avoid the weather in Ohio....could have been us...in a way (though not this stretch)...I ended up putting in 8 hours behind the wheel to avoid this Thursday. So glad we all preplanned. Prayers for those impacted.
So sad.
May the dead rest in peace.
May the injured receive healing.
God bless allthe first responders there, and all over our country this Christmas Eve.
The toll on our highways andbyways will increase hour by hour.
God be with all the rescuers tonight.
Exactly. Whiteouts come out of nowhere. Unless the posters were riding shotgun in one of the vehicles, they have NO IDEA what actually occurred.
Talk about judgmental.
We disperse for work and opportunity...for me it was school, service, and work...for my brothers it was work...same for my sisters...my hometown of 800 had no work...we still call it home.
may everyone have safe travels or safe staying home....God bless all.
If you live in a snow and ice-prone area, there’s no reason the family can’t get together to plan a literal “Christmas in July.” It wouldn’t have the Currier and Ives ambience, of course, but everyone would likely come through uninjured.*
*Offer not valid in case of long-seething family quarrels and/or belligerent brother-in-law.
My mom agrees with you. There is very little family left within convenient driving distance. Relatives moved away for various reasons, but nothing that should really trump being close to family.
Learning to drive under wintry conditions as well. If you have to drive 20mph and start stopping a milevaway, do that.
Even close family members usually have specific plans on Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. that don't include us.
So instead of guilting everyone to be together on "that special day", we instead get together and have a special time together on a not so special day.

The least we can do is get home for Christmas come hook or crook! /sarc
Pedal to the metal means you’re less likely to end up in the Danger Zone, and more likely to end up in the Crumple Zone.
How about getting a job? My hometown had two things that would pay well, become a State employee (it is the State Capital) or walk five blocks from my high school and sign up to become a member of the UAW and shove pistons into engine blocks for 30 years.
Also, I never wanted to be a civilian and yearned to join the military. As a matter of fact all four of my parents children had a career in the military and ended up all over the USA after getting out to have a good job using the skills we learned while serving.
This isn't an agrarian society where a vast majority of our population works on the family farms and companies actually discourage their workers from working an entire career with that one company. It is either move to where the next job is or your family lives in a cardboard box and starves.
