Weekly Garden Thread - December 17-23, 2022 [Winter Weather Folklore Edition]
December 17, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Sitting in dad’s room at rehab (mom just left - finally convinced her to do shifts) - wish I had brought my seed catalogs with me. I have gotten my nieces and little nephew the two books that you recommended for Christmas and in addition to that, I am getting them some seeds to go with it. They won’t have the seeds by Christmas, but that’s okay.

The Pinetree Gardens catalog had collections of six seeds for kids and I looked at the ideas they had and came up with my own. I don’t have the actual names for some but I’ll describe what I came up with:

Thumbelina carrots - round, great for snacking
‘Rattlesnake’ green beans
Yum Yum snacking peppers - small & sweet
Sugar snap peas - variety is very sweet, good snacks
Miniature pumpkins that will grow on a trellis (one niece has limited garden space)
Teddy Bear sunflowers - the true dwarf ones

I tried to pick very edible, snackable veggies, a flower & a pumpkin. The little guy who will pick/eat tomatoes green, ripe, or rotten should like the peppers & carrots for sure.

I have grown Teddy Bear sunflowers & they are adorable. Thought about a full size pumpkin for the girls, but I’ll let their mom deal with that - the small ones are cute for decorating & the girls are very artistic.

Boy, do seed package costs add up in a hurry! :-)

Nice snowshoes!

The wind all came here. 3-4 inches of snow but it was blowing all over the place.

Had to jump start Mrs. Petes Car. Supposed to warm up to the 40s and 50s next week! I will pull the covers off the few remaining plants and see if I can get any more growth before the New Year.

Sounds perfect!

We’ll do a thorough Seed Catalog Thread in January. So far I’ve gotten SSE, Seeds-n-Such and two from Jung’s; Vermont Bean Seed Company and Totally Tomatoes - which is probably my favorite catalog of them all.

Nothing from Baker Creek, yet - but last year’s is still in my stack of ‘Garden Porn,’ LOL!
