Thinking of buying a used Toyota 4Runner . Any thoughts?

What is your budget? What are you using it for? Where do you live?

All Toyotas are tops in quality & performance.

Son has 4runner and RAV4 - I’ve driven 4Runner hundreds of miles, like a big Lexus. Handles almost like wife’s Lexus GS350 with modified sport suspension.

No comparison between Jeep & Toyota quality (another son has Jeeps...)

My son has a 4Runner, about 2006 vintage, and you won’t pry it from his cold, dead hands. We’ll, maybe his dead hands….

I review cars and have driven several generations of 4Runner. Bulletproof, terrific off road, stale technology (except for the damn “safety Nannie’s”), but I’d look at it first if I were shopping in that niche. Truck-based (unlike most of today’s SUV’s), and unsophisticated but excellent utility vehicle (no sport, really) that will probably outlast you. Maybe, if you’re buying used, save some gas by going V6 rather than V8, if you have a choice.

I took a new one on an off road trip last spring and wrote it up here, if you’re interested: https://www.technofile.com/cars/Elkford_4runner.html

Good luck!

I currently drive a 2006 Toyota Highlander with over 209,000 miles on it. We bought it brand new and have not been sorry. It’s in very good shape. I never had a Jeep but the Hondas and Toyotas have been very, very good to me. I know this is not a direct answer to your question but it’s all I got. Good luck.

My 18 year old 4Runner just passed 200k miles and still runs well. In its younger days it survived many a drive into the Mojave desert and Death Valley.

I’ve owned all three and the Highlander and Rav4 are probably better than the 4Runner in urban areas while the 4Runner is a great offroader.

If you can find anything under 150K for $10,000 or less, it’s probably broken or you have a stupid seller.

live in north country

have an outback that doesnt seem to like my unpaved road

have usually been driving truck based vehicles, Mazda MPV, Nissan Xterra Jeep Saharas, with a detour into a Golf deisel

I am not driving that much so the gas economy is not as much of a factor.

thanks I am going to read that.

I am thinking this one has too much tech for me, but the mileage is prime.

We have an unlicensed Toyota pickup that we use on the ranch. You can drive it practically anywhere and in practically any conditions. And even if it’s -25F out it always starts.

I have no idea what year it is, how many miles are on it, what engine is in it, or etc.

It’s brown with a flatbed on it. And it works. That’s all I need to know!

I consider the 4Runner one of the best vehicles on the road. Loved mine.

I drove a company-owned 4-Runner in Yemen over awful terrain.

Best ever SUV.

Can’t afford one in the US without going a-hole deep in debt.
