On Monday afternoon, just before 3:30 p.m., the couple heard their animals making the kind of noises that might warrant an inspection.
According to Lieutenant Michael Arens of the San Diego County Sheriff's San Marcos Station, the couple went outside for peace of mind, but instead saw 36-year-old Alexander Belinksy attempting to abscond with one their goats.
The couple attempted to intervene, but Belinsky allegedly threw them to the ground.
The 79-year-old may have regarded goat theft to be a matter suited to remedy by bare hands, but an assault on his wife was apparently cause for a constitutionally-protected riposte.
The old-timer went inside his home and, fearing for wife's safety and his own, grabbed his rifle.
According to Arens, as the homeowner set about getting his deadly instrument, Belinsky tossed the goat into the front passenger seat of a dune buggy sitting on the property. With the creature riding shotgun, the suspect prepared to drive away.
The old man burst out of his house, readied his rifle, and once again confronted the would-be goat wrangler.
Arens indicated that Belinsky got out of the dune buggy and charged the homeowner, keen on disarming the geriatric. However, the homeowner wasn't ready to concede control over his fate and domain to some trespasser.
In the resultant struggle, the 79-year-old fired his rifle.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the bullet struck Belinsky in the stomach.
Deputies soon arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect for robbery, elder abuse, attempted vehicle theft, residential burglary, animal cruelty, and battery.

Maybe he thought they were just running a dating service. Remember that old country western song “Mah girl done left me but I still got mah goat”.
In Florida, I believe that it is a first degree felony. Which is a 20 year felony.
The rifle must have been a 22, nobody goes into emergency about the patient, who is probably frantically requesting some legal weed for pain and a couple of Great Value Band Aides.
My question as well! I can’t (well, actually I can)imagine what he was going to do with the goat. I put my hands together for the elderly gentleman who was protecting his wife, himself, and his property.👍
If he survives.
No word in the excerpt about him being taken to the hospital...
= = =
Gut shot with a rifle.
What caliber?
I would think any centerfire would have made a real mess. Unless a Full Metal Jacket, going through.
Or .22 LR, maybe?
True...
Hope the goat is ok.
Ditto that
Gun control:
Is a steady hand
And a beady eye.
I’m retired as well. We are fortunate enough to have a bike path very near to us.
I have been walking and have extended the distance I walk to 6 miles round trip.
I’ve been thinking of getting a bicycle, maybe next spring, and extending my range. My brother just turned 70 and he and my sister-in-law take their grandkids out now and then.
Maybe next year will be the year for me..
Advice:
12 gauge. He nearly lost his life (assuming it wasn’t a bolt action).
Horrible city to be scrutinized for use of a rifle with a living witness (THE victim in the eyes of a lefty DA).
Remember when mainstream journalism was this well-written? The only thing missing was a short statement about the present state of the goat...
The neighbor was a political illiterate, and his benchmark for elder behavior was his grandmother, who sipped beer all day snd talked back to the TV.
SoCal. Could have been a beaner wanting a goat for a barbecue. .
Goat rustler meets rancher gets hurt
Too old to mess around. SHoot em!
That said, the only thing about walking is that unless you are walking in the hills and mountains, it isn't much of a cardio workout (no heavy breathing/heart pounding)
A bike on the other hand will turn your heart into a beast because it just gets stronger and stronger.
I have a good friend who had a heart attack (a widow-maker) several years ago. After he left the hospital, he started walking. He then got a bike and started riding every day.
That's been a few years now and he is still riding between 5 and 40 miles a day.
He's one of the guys I ride with.
In fact, he's the fastest of the old-timers I ride with (he's now 74 and in great shape).
BTW, he didn't get fast intentionally. He just rides a lot and all of a sudden he discovered he was faster than everyone else...usually without even trying.
Cycling is very popular with old-timers because it's easy on the feet and legs. There are many clubs for old-timers. Needless to say, they are a handsome bunch of men and women.;-)
More details. I suspect drugs...
Once the rustler threw either of them to the ground, he became a risk to life.
Fire away. Just make sure that the first shot does the job ‘cause once he starts running away or is on the ground you have to quit shooting.
An incident like this could cause a war in the Balkans.
