California man ends up with a bullet in his gut after trying to steal a goat from a 79-year-old

On Monday afternoon, just before 3:30 p.m., the couple heard their animals making the kind of noises that might warrant an inspection.

According to Lieutenant Michael Arens of the San Diego County Sheriff's San Marcos Station, the couple went outside for peace of mind, but instead saw 36-year-old Alexander Belinksy attempting to abscond with one their goats.

The couple attempted to intervene, but Belinsky allegedly threw them to the ground.

The 79-year-old may have regarded goat theft to be a matter suited to remedy by bare hands, but an assault on his wife was apparently cause for a constitutionally-protected riposte.

The old-timer went inside his home and, fearing for wife's safety and his own, grabbed his rifle.

According to Arens, as the homeowner set about getting his deadly instrument, Belinsky tossed the goat into the front passenger seat of a dune buggy sitting on the property. With the creature riding shotgun, the suspect prepared to drive away.

The old man burst out of his house, readied his rifle, and once again confronted the would-be goat wrangler.

Arens indicated that Belinsky got out of the dune buggy and charged the homeowner, keen on disarming the geriatric. However, the homeowner wasn't ready to concede control over his fate and domain to some trespasser.

In the resultant struggle, the 79-year-old fired his rifle.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the bullet struck Belinsky in the stomach.

Deputies soon arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect for robbery, elder abuse, attempted vehicle theft, residential burglary, animal cruelty, and battery.

Livestock theft really gets the man’s goat, quite literally.

So he’s 79 and she’s 60...

Why wasn’t she defending him, or atleast participating in the fight?

Although San Diego is one of the few relatively sane coastal big cities in California, I won’t be surprise if the 79 year old man is charged with some gun crime. /sadly not even close to sarc

If he survives.

No word in the excerpt about him being taken to the hospital...

Some punks think older people are easy marks. That's not always true.

Some older people stay in good physical and mental shape and aren't to be messed with.

This 79 y/o appears to be one of the strong ones.

The old guy should have pulled the trigger twice ... the recoil would have lifted the barrel a bit thereby saving the taxpayers a lot of money as well as eliminating the possibility that the perp, when he is able, may want revenge.

Several years ago, I read a story about three couples in their 80’s walking along a beach in the Caribbean. Four local knuckledraggers thought them an easy target.

The three elderly gentlemen were all veterans of the War in the Pacific. When the dust settled, three knuckedraggers were dead and the fourth was badly injured.

I love stories with happy endings.

Some punks think older people are easy marks

If the victim is elderly, in addition to the minimum mandatory sentence imposed by the statute, the statute also reclassifies battery from a misdemeanor to a felony, punishable by a term of prison of up to five years and a fine of up to $5,000.

What language was that translated from? That is the weirdest use of syntax I’ve read in a long time!

That said, I love a Happy Ending!

And, are they having the goat as their Christmas Dinner? ;)

Good story.

I bicycle for exercise and sometimes ride with a bunch of old-timers (70+) who are very fast. On occasion, some younger people (in their 20s or 30s) ride with us and they inevitably think we old-timers are going to be weak and frail.

It is always interesting to see how confused they are when their stereotypes crumble.

Not only are they surprised by how strong the older guys and gals are, they are depressed because they realize they have been outdone by a bunch of septuagenarians.

It appears to me that older people who take care of themselves by working out are barely less fit than they were when they were younger (if at all).

As a cyclist, I was never at the Olympic level though my speed was respectable. After riding now for about 40 years, I am slightly faster. I have kept files on a tough hill at a state park near my home from 30 years ago and have noticed that I am significantly faster on it at the present time. In fact, I set an all-time record on that hill a year ago.

That said, I don't think my increased speed is due to age. I just think I have more time to work out now that I am retired.;-)
