Starbucks has rolled out a new tipping system and customers are freaking out

Tipping at restaurants and coffee shops can be tricky business. Technically, it isn’t mandatory, but it’s increasingly looked down upon if you skip it altogether. That’s exactly the pickle customers are finding themselves in with the new tipping system at Starbucks.

The world-famous coffee chain announced the initiative in May as a way for customers to “recognize their favorite baristas.” They began rolling it out in some stores in September, where customers paying with debit or credit cards can give the barista a $1, $2 or custom tip—prompting some strong feelings in the process.

A Reddit thread about the tipping system has racked up more than 100 comments.

“It works so well for in-store purchases but yeah having it in drive thru is so awkward I never know what to say,” one user wrote

One Twitter user wrote: “I went through the Starbucks Drive through and got one drink and they now start asking if you want to tip as soon as you pull your card out to pay while looking at you It’s so awkward…… just pay these people a better wage.”

Starting August 1, Starbucks increased the average pay for employees to nearly $17/hour in the U.S. Those hired before May 2 would receive either a 3% wage increase or $15/hour, whichever is higher, a spokesperson at Starbucks said.

Another Twitter user wrote: “I’m really not trying to be rude bc I know customer service jobs are hard work but now they want tips at the drive-thru at my Starbucks when you pay with a card… you’re literally just handing it to me.”

One Facebook user wrote: “People WILL call me cheap, but I rarely tip on to-go orders or grabbing a coffee…I do tip very well when I go to dinner, or use various services.

I see them on every corner, in every grocery store. I had a meeting there. Once.
I think they sell coffeeish thingys. Expensive, I’m told.

“Customers are freaking out”? All customers? Some customers? Two customers?

Ok, a few people who posted on Twitter.

Great reporting there, dude.

Starbucks tastes like piss.

*********

You drink piss? What is the taste resemblance between the two?

Here’s my rule for tipping...
If you order from a menu-—tip.
If you order from a menu board, even if they bring the food to you when it’s ready-—no tip.

Starbucks over roasts its coffee, removing all possible good flavors. Even their “light” is a “dark.”

French roast has a history, and its not good.

It’s laughable at how they got people to choose what the French did under great duress, with bad/spoiled beans, just to have “something,” from what normally had been garbage.

People pay for that!

Only times I’ve ever been in a Starbucks were when a training group met there to drive to a private range.

Sorry to offended you. I didn’t think we had Starbucks drinkers here. It still tastes like piss from a fluffy little French poodle.

I’d love to see tipping statistics broken down by demographics. When my son was in the pizza delivery business he told me on several occasions that a particular race were horrible tippers.

At first I thought it was just an anomaly, but since then I’ve had several tell me that they had the same experience.

First of all, such FUN hearing about your business! My sister does pet sitting on the side and she makes really good money at it. People are very generous when it comes to quality pet care.

Secondly, if it ever appears that I have a, ‘favorite barista’ I request that one of you shoot me, LOL!

Well, putting it another way, those who expect reparations from people who died a hundred years ago or more are not likely to be tippers today.

They do it at subway too. If they’re not bringing it to my table no tip.

Thank you. This is a very solid and admirable approach.

In the past, I have left our private garbage man a tip in an envelope attached to the can. Got no thank you or other response.

Thanks, I just had a conversation with a colleague who runs a much bigger pet business. He keeps referring people to us because the potential client is ‘too finicky.’ LOL. His dog walkers rarely get tips. And he admits his people are not trained to deliver ‘personalized’ service. So there ya’ go.

And yes we are busy. Been fully booked for November and December since August! Even in these inflationary times, people still go home for Christmas/Thanksgiving. I cannot wait to see what the team comes up with for this Christmas pets experience!

I quit Starbucks two years ago and don’t miss it one bit. Tipping is for service above and beyond...which you don’t get at Starbucks, neither at the drive through or even in-store where the automatons behind the counter do nothing to make a visit noteworthy and seemingly don’t have the time to clean up the fixings bar, empty the trash during peak periods or clean the bathrooms.

They can’t spit in your coffee if you never go to Starbucks.

I never go to starbucks, but I have family who do.
If I want coffee on the road, I go to McDonalds ot a QT for gas. McDonalds large coffee runs between 1 And 1.50 for a large.

Anytime a business trys to grab extra money they aren’t entitled to, my answer is always NO. Like when those pink ribbons for breast cancer were begging $ at the register....no. I k ew it was a Planned Pare thood deception. I think it’s rude.

I went to a cracker barrel and they tried to slide a tip through....no. They don’t know if I left cash on the table or quietly put it into my waitress’s hand so she could hide it. It’s not my responsibility to pay your employee’s wages. Tips are a secret thing between me and the waitress.
