Krill oil protects dopaminergic neurons from age-related degeneration
Medical Xpress / Impact Journals LLC / Aging ^ | Nov. 23, 2022 | Tanima SenGupta et al

There is accumulating evidence that interfering with the basic aging mechanisms can enhance healthy longevity. The interventional/therapeutic strategies targeting multiple aging hallmarks could be more effective than targeting one hallmark. While health-promoting qualities of marine oils have been extensively studied, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood.

Lipid extracts from Antarctic krill are rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids choline, and astaxanthin. In this new study, researchers used C. elegans and human cells to investigate whether krill oil promotes healthy aging.

"In a C. elegans model of Parkinson's disease, we show that krill oil protects dopaminergic neurons from aging-related degeneration, decreases alpha-synuclein aggregation, and improves dopamine-dependent behavior and cognition," the researchers state.

Krill oil rewires distinct gene expression programs that contribute to attenuating several aging hallmarks, including oxidative stress, proteotoxic stress, senescence, genomic instability, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Mechanistically, krill oil increases neuronal resilience through temporal transcriptome rewiring to promote anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammation via healthspan regulating transcription factors such as SNK-1. Moreover, krill oil promotes dopaminergic neuron survival through regulation of synaptic transmission and neuronal functions via PBO-2 and RIM-1.

"Collectively, krill oil rewires global gene expression programs and promotes healthy aging via abrogating multiple aging hallmarks, suggesting directions for further pre-clinical and clinical explorations," the researchers conclude.

Krill oil has a slightly different make up than normal fish oil. One concern brought up in a prior study was that krill oil somehow worsened insulin sensitivity by over 25%, believed to be from Phospholipid binding to krill protein, according to one source I referenced.

Krill oil? And krill is a type of zooplankton, right?

I recommend mixing it with soy bean and lentil in order to balance the taste and enhance nutritional value!

This might prove to be a "miracle food of high-energy plankton gathered from the oceans of the world."

Spokeshave who has been on Arctic Krill Oil for 6 months now.

Seems to assist with muscle strength and balance.

Insulin sensitivity…. I would be interested in your source. My hubby may have just eaten his last thanksgiving meal at 56. I am looking at some Hail Mary treatment that we working class can afford.

I read that eating fish from Arctic waters is beneficial to health and longevity....So arctic fish eat arctic krill...so bypass the middle man (er...fish).

I remember looking at Krill Oil after a couple of your earlier posts about it. It sounds like it's got great effects, but there's a lot of concern that the krill population is declining and that the popularity of krill oil has something to do with it.

This article does not mention krill oil as a reason, though. Naturally, it suspects climate change, but another factor is an interesting possibility -- a rebound in whale populations after the end of commercial whaling. [I don't recall commercial whaling being ended - was it?]

Men who consume chocolate or meat consume more iron than they need. I donate blood every two years to prevent excess iron.

Krill oil worsens insulin sensitivity:

This is not a good thing.

There are things to help with insulin sensitivity, but going low carb/keto is you quickest bang for your buck.

How is he doing?

Chinese factory ships will sweep the Antarctic ocean clean. Poor whales, poor penguins.

Totally impossible.

The blue whale feeds exclusively on a tiny crustacean called krill and eats it by the ton, literally. In a single day of feeding, a blue whale can ingest 16 tonnes of krill, or 12% of its own body weight!

No, they are crustaceans and look like very small shrimp. They do eat plankton.

Biggest middle man is a humpback whale. It’s pretty much their main food source.

Now if krill can be properly farmed….
