How Eels Almost Became the Thanksgiving Main Dish

Squanto giving the pilgrims eels made sense given the time during which he discovered the pilgrims. Eels do not like cold water. During the winter, they gather in large numbers to ball up and twist themselves together in the mud. This makes them easy to catch with the forked spears that were typically used by the Native Americans.

Native Americans would also harvest eels in large numbers by building river weirs in the autumn. River weirs arer small-scale dams that raise the water levels in a small area to allow for the build-up of (in this case) the eel population. After the eels were caught, they were dried and smoked for the winter. They provided a long-lasting, reliable food source.

When the first Thanksgiving meal took place the following year, it was very likely that eel was served at the table.

I like doing different dressing/stuffing, added oysters one year after I saw that classic first Thanksgiving image and there were oyster shells all around. Did it just once.

SQUANTO: Here. You eat these for celebration.

PILGRIM: Uhhh...Thank you! (hands them to wife and whispers “Bury these in the garden and plant the corn on top-that way he’ll never see that we threw them out!”)

My in-laws make this nasty oyster dressing every year. I finally got them to make cornbread dressing too after I started bringing my own. Yuck. That oyster dressing looks slimy and gross.

In my Drum Corps days, we once stayed at a high school in Clay City, Ohio. Their mascot was the Eels.

Actually lobsters which were then considered a trash fish, provided critical sustenance to the early settlers in Massachusetts. Also when the Pilgrims landed on Cape Cod they met an English speaking Indian who had dealt with English cod fisherman. Even then facts were never allowed to ruin a good narrative.

My first time in London, my wife and I being tourists went into Harrod’s Department Store, in the food section of the store, they had eels in gelatin, I would need to be starving to eat eels in gelatin and I’ve eaten a bunch of crazy things in my life.
