Imprisoned American basketball star Brittney Griner has reportedly been taken to a penal colony in Mordovia, a Russian region roughly 300 miles southeast of Moscow, to serve her nine-year sentence on drug charges.
Griner has been moved to IK-2 in Yavas, one of several penal colonies in the region, according to Reuters.
The WNBA All-Star's legal team confirmed the report on Thursday afternoon.
'We can confirm that Brittney began serving her sentence at IK-2 in Mordovia,' read her attorneys' statement. 'We visited her early this week. Brittney is doing as well as could be expected and trying to stay strong as she adapts to a new environment. Considering that this is a very challenging period for her, there will be no further comments from us.'
A State Department Spokesperson declined to confirm the Reuters report earlier, telling DailyMail.com that Russia has refused to share any details with the US Embassy.
'We are aware of reports of her location, and in frequent contact with Ms. Griner's legal team,' a State Department spokesperson wrote in an email to DailyMail.com. 'However, the Russian Federation has still failed to provide any official notification for such a move of a US citizen, which we strongly protest. The Embassy has continued to press for more information about her transfer and current location.'
Griner was sentenced in August following her February arrest at an airport in Moscow, when Russian authorities say she was caught entering the country with vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She had been at a detention center near Moscow until November 4, when she was moved to an undisclosed prison.
It has been two weeks since any information about her whereabouts have surfaced.

Even grizzled, cranky, cynical old me thinks this is horrific and unacceptable for an American citizen especially considering the bogus circumstances. She is being used as a pawn.
Much like the January 6th prisoners are being held in horrific dungeons on American soil, enduring literal torture at the hands of Hell’s minions.

And I would have been okay with that. Drug traffickers ruin lives and destroy communities. The death penalty is appropriate in those cases.
But as far as I can tell, no smuggling was involved here. The only life Griner was messing with was her own.
Don’t get me wrong. Russia is a sovereign nation and so we must respect their laws, if those laws are fairly applied. And I guess Griner got a fair trial.
I’m speaking instead in a more general, moral sense. The old saying “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” was meant to work both ways. Don’t be too lenient. And don’t be too harsh.
No empathy or sympathy. Zero. Enjoy your stay in the socialist/ communist hellhole you love so much, skank.

Griner never tried to claim the drugs were planted, and admitted they were hers (his?) Her excuse was that she was packing in a hurry and didn't realize she had put them in the suitcase. Hey - who among us hasn't packed in a hurry, and inadvertently tossed drugs into our suitcase?
Tough nuts.
I will bet $1 right now that she spends her entire time there blaming the USA for not getting her out and when she comes home she'll hate this country more than ever.
It's how people like her think.
You have to respect the laws of the place you are going or risk the penalty.

I’m confident she’ll be fine. She’s muscular and can do heavy work. It’s possible she would make Russia her permanent residence if they accept her.
