Imprisoned American basketball star Brittney Griner has reportedly been taken to a penal colony in Mordovia, a Russian region roughly 300 miles southeast of Moscow, to serve her nine-year sentence on drug charges.
Griner has been moved to IK-2 in Yavas, one of several penal colonies in the region, according to Reuters.
The WNBA All-Star's legal team confirmed the report on Thursday afternoon.
'We can confirm that Brittney began serving her sentence at IK-2 in Mordovia,' read her attorneys' statement. 'We visited her early this week. Brittney is doing as well as could be expected and trying to stay strong as she adapts to a new environment. Considering that this is a very challenging period for her, there will be no further comments from us.'
A State Department Spokesperson declined to confirm the Reuters report earlier, telling DailyMail.com that Russia has refused to share any details with the US Embassy.
'We are aware of reports of her location, and in frequent contact with Ms. Griner's legal team,' a State Department spokesperson wrote in an email to DailyMail.com. 'However, the Russian Federation has still failed to provide any official notification for such a move of a US citizen, which we strongly protest. The Embassy has continued to press for more information about her transfer and current location.'
Griner was sentenced in August following her February arrest at an airport in Moscow, when Russian authorities say she was caught entering the country with vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She had been at a detention center near Moscow until November 4, when she was moved to an undisclosed prison.
It has been two weeks since any information about her whereabouts have surfaced.

We may see her as a pawn, but I think it’s a lot simpler. Every year Americans are arrested in foreign countries for violating drug laws. They go to jail. It just happens that there’s a war going on and because of that her jail term is in the news and presented as political.
This is from the article at the link. “The Philadelphia-based law office, which aids Americans imprisoned abroad, estimates that 1,500 to 2,000 Americans are being held in foreign jails on such charges as drug possession, customs violations and disorderly conduct.” From another article, in 2019 Russia had 26,200 foreign nationals in their prison system.
She won’t appreciate the US. She’ll complain about the US failure to get her out

Brittany did not end up at some penal colony in Siberia.This Mordova is east of the Volga but west of the Urals.

Yes, and it would have been done in an honorable way that would have satisfied everyone involved.
On the other hand, Potato Head Joe will do one of two things. He might just continue to lament the situation while Griner stays put in the gulag. Or he might eventually trade five Russian spies plus a ton of gold bullion for Griner.
Neither is quite the Art of the Deal, if you get what I mean.
Give the devil his due. I'm sure Obama and Biden have tried to help Griner. But right now, Putin isn't feeling too kindly toward the Obama/Biden regime.

Many of the most famous, infamous liberals have no soul or conscience either. Their pronouns are ME, MYSELF, and I. There are no laws, rules, or regulations that apply to them in their world. Griner may have followed the appropriate anti-American, LGBTQWERTY wokeness parade, but she is not important enough for the Obama/Biden regime to do anything.
