This antibiotic often prescribed for kids is in short supply. What’s the impact? (amoxicillin)

As colds, flu and more serious respiratory infections are on the uptick, the FDA is reporting a shortage of amoxicillin

Amoxicillin, an antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, respiratory infections and strep throat, is in short supply, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA has assigned “currently in shortage” status to oral powder for suspension amoxicillin. Most of the products in short supply are the powder form of amoxicillin which is mixed with water at pharmacies to become a liquid formulation of the drug, which is often used to treat young children, the agency reports.

While there is a shortage of amoxicillin as winter looms and cold and flu season kicks into gear, officials say other treatments are available and most common infections in young children are viral, which do not require antibiotics.

Amoxicillin alternatives For young children who develop ear infections or urinary tract infections, for which amoxicillin is often prescribed, there are other suitable, effective antibiotics, experts say.

If a child is able to swallow pills, that form of amoxicillin may be available, although the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists has also posted on its website a list of the various oral amoxicillin products that are currently in short supply. The list includes oral powder for suspension, tablets, chewable tablets and capsules.

Health care providers will be aware of suitable alternatives depending on the bacteria causing the infection.

According to prevention.com, the right swap “depends on what you are treating,” said Jamie Alan, associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University.

“For pneumonia, you could potentially use azithromycin,” Alan said. “For ear infections, you can use a related medication like cefdinir or amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Augmentin).”

Why is there an amoxicillin shortage?

Can confirm there is a shortage of Amoxicillin, but it doesn’t seem to be severe yet. Had a prescription for my son that was on back order at our normal pharmacy, but I was able to get it filled at another pharmacy near our home. I’ve never had this issue with a common drug like Amoxicillin not being in stock until now.

Had the same thing happen for my daughter. The Pharmacist commented he has never seen this happen and then rolled his eyes because I know his political point of view ( he is not woke).

I can go pick some up at the local feed store. It’s made for fish but comes on the same strength as for humans. No prescription required. That’s where I got Ivermectin and Doxycycline for my one bout of covid.

If you spent the last two years learning how to get Rx from India, as I did, then shortages like this aren’t of pressing concern. I’ve got plenty of amoxicillin, and ivermectin, and HCQ...

Nope no shots. The 2 yr old a month ago had the flu vaccine, so did my sis, honestly the flu shot made her feel worse than the actual flu..The 7 yr old had nothing, all have had rona, twice, corona was NOTHING compared to RSV, RSV is just horrible, the coughing, I can see why its so dangerous for babies the 7 yr old was coughing so bad thank God its bronchitis and not pneumonia she took him to urgent care a few days ago because he almost collapsed from not sleeping all night from coughing. The doc gave him steroid pills to take but she didnt give it to him, he is better now so doesnt need it, the cough will linger the doc said it could take weeks but the meds worked thank God

I’m hearing of an Adderall shortage too. It makes me wonder how many people we encounter on a daily basis that are “cranked” up on pharmaceuticals?

Supply chain issues thanks to Biden and I also suspect governments are hoarding medications in preparation for the potential of WW3 to breakout.

Not sure exact date (January 2023 ?) but FDA is outlawing those sales unless you go through a veterinarian.

I just bought a bottle of 100 tablets a few weeks ago on the possible shortage news. Just throw it in The freezer for a rainy day.

What is the shelf life of Amoxicillin?

Keep it in the freezer and good foe several years. I think tetracycline is one that has a relatively short shelf-life and can become toxic.
