As colds, flu and more serious respiratory infections are on the uptick, the FDA is reporting a shortage of amoxicillin
Amoxicillin, an antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, respiratory infections and strep throat, is in short supply, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA has assigned “currently in shortage” status to oral powder for suspension amoxicillin. Most of the products in short supply are the powder form of amoxicillin which is mixed with water at pharmacies to become a liquid formulation of the drug, which is often used to treat young children, the agency reports.
While there is a shortage of amoxicillin as winter looms and cold and flu season kicks into gear, officials say other treatments are available and most common infections in young children are viral, which do not require antibiotics.
Amoxicillin alternatives For young children who develop ear infections or urinary tract infections, for which amoxicillin is often prescribed, there are other suitable, effective antibiotics, experts say.
If a child is able to swallow pills, that form of amoxicillin may be available, although the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists has also posted on its website a list of the various oral amoxicillin products that are currently in short supply. The list includes oral powder for suspension, tablets, chewable tablets and capsules.
Health care providers will be aware of suitable alternatives depending on the bacteria causing the infection.
According to prevention.com, the right swap “depends on what you are treating,” said Jamie Alan, associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University.
“For pneumonia, you could potentially use azithromycin,” Alan said. “For ear infections, you can use a related medication like cefdinir or amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Augmentin).”

Prepper demand?
Couple this with the shortage of Formula, we'll have starving dead babies. That is the impact. If only one it's too many.
Let's go Brandon!
What is the shelf life of Amoxicillin?
Can confirm there is a shortage of Amoxicillin, but it doesn’t seem to be severe yet. Had a prescription for my son that was on back order at our normal pharmacy, but I was able to get it filled at another pharmacy near our home.
I’ve never had this issue with a common drug like Amoxicillin not being in stock until now.
none of my kids ever received amoxicillin...but 50 years later my grandchildren did...,p.in lieu of baby aspirin..vicks...vaporizer...chicken soup...bigger kids got honey and lemon tea
How is there a shortage on almost everything?
The greatest economy ever wants answers...
Atm people don’t feel it because we’re really good at robbing Peter to pay Paul. Somewhere that will give out in a big way.
I would think the first solution is to find out why there is a shortage.
Both of my nephews have rsv currently and both are on amoxicillin one for slight pneumonia and double ear infection the other for bronchitis and double ear infection
There's no shortage of illegal drugs - tons of fentanyl crossing the border with millions of illegals.
I'm guessing the same groups are behind both the excess and the shortages... One more reason we need to elect Trump.
The next time you go to the doctor orheaven forbid the hospital, check out where everything is made … drugs, syringes, catheters, etc. It ain’t pretty.
The answer is "made in China" and since they're on pertetual lockdown, they're not making it either. At least they're not selling it to us.
I just read their is one facility in the US that makes Amoxicillin in TN. It opened in 2021.

Geeeeee.....now, why would there be shortage, on amoxicillan???
Same reason for the baby formula shortage? The diesel shortage? The food shortage??
These people are sick.
And, how many of these RSV cases have had the dang $hots???
Hopefully, they did not have the $hots.
Hopefully, they recover, quickly.
RSV used to be a nothingburger, for kids (every year), up until recently. :-(
Like in auto parts though, India, Vietnam, and Indonesia are upping their market share, as China moves up the wage scale.
Maybe all this BS will get manufacturing back home.
My guess...its just another cheap drug that's completely out sourced to China India or some 3rd world country ...
