Our local Mall is about dead.
It was once the busiest shopping center for 50 miles around.
Now it’s being talked about being torn down for condos...............
It would take actions which liberals would oppose, such as sweeping out homeless, and having the police presence as you mention.
I’m glad I went to Union Station several times when it was nice.
There was some place there that had melt-in-your-mouth cannolis. And it was just a neat place to wander around.
I haven’t visited the DC area since 2015, and although I have family and friends there, I don’t have any desire to go back there.
I was in and out of Union Station a few times back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Not much since then.
I like riding Amtrak and would take it down to Richmond or a Metroliner up to Philadelphia.
It’s been a long time but I remember the place as looking really nice. IIRC, the neighborhood around there wasn’t too bad either.
Too bad to see it’s fallen on hard times.
Why not dump truckloads of taxpayer money on it? That usually does a lot of good.
Problem is that DC government sucks. Bowser is a complete asshat as Mayor. And the DC/NYC/Boston elite funnel through Union Station and don’t care.
Democrat controlled. city , did they expect some other outcome ?
i thought they were talking about union station in L.A. It’s still “ok” and not as bad as NYC’s.
If only there were someone who could take charge with vision and the ability to get things done, like, for example Donald Trump...
I could care less about Union Station or any other shxthole city with drug, alcohol and crime problems. They get what they voted for so they can live with the problems they voted for and aren’t allowed to bitch.
......Calls for fire and emergency services show the range of problems at the station, including drug and alcohol intoxication, overdoses and assaults.
Could it be there might be a connection between these things. Is it even possible??
I remember seeing Union Station as a kid. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open, awestruck.
Back in the late ‘70s the Hyatt next door hosted CPAC. That was back in the day when Ronald Reagan was the featured final banquet speaker, John Ashbrook was the keynote speaker, and also featured were Phil Crane, Larry McDonald, M. Stanton Evans, Phillis Schlafly, Bob Dornan, Jesse Helms, Henry Hyde, Steve Symms, James Buckley, and more. From Capitol Hill neighborhoods one could easily walk to Union Station and the Hyatt. DC as a whole was much nicer then.
Years ago DC wanted to have a slogan, so they asked the folks.
My favorite didn’t win.
“Washington DC A work free drug place.”
On July 4, 2019 our connecting flight DCA-BOS was cancelled due to weather and Trump’s Lincoln Memorial speech. We had the idea to take a night bus, which left from Union Station. We could hear the fireworks, but couldn’t see them. As a side note, there’s a whole different type of people at the NYC bus station at 2AM where we made our connection.
In 1999, [WETV?] Public TV station was on Massachusetts Ave., northwest from Union Station.
In 1999, the surrounding area was OK to walk around in the daytime - except when near the Public TV station.
CATO Institute, the Heritage Foundation, and the American Enterprise Institute were all on Massachusetts Ave.
If voters or those counting the fraudulent votes thought it was a priority....
Union Station like much of DC started dying after MLKing was killed on 4 April 1968, and the riots started that night.
Martin Luther King, Jr., original name Michael King, Jr., (born January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.—MLK died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tennessee), ..
In Washington DC., by the time authorities had quelled the most intense disorders, more than a thousand fires had been set, more than 8,000 people had been arrested, parts of neighborhoods were ravaged, some blocks lay in ruins, and 13 people were dead, including two at the hands of police.
