Union Station has fallen on hard times. Can it be saved?
Washington Post ^ | November 13, 2022 | Luz Lazo

Union Station had as many as 100 stores more than two decades ago. It’s down to about 40 retailers and eateries while more than half its commercial space sits vacant.

Calls for fire and emergency services show the range of problems at the station, including drug and alcohol intoxication, overdoses and assaults. Meanwhile, foot traffic remains well below pre-pandemic levels, with Metro and commuter rail traffic roughly halved, even as Amtrak reaches more solid footing.

On July 4, 2019 our connecting flight DCA-BOS was cancelled due to weather and Trump’s Lincoln Memorial speech. We had the idea to take a night bus, which left from Union Station. We could hear the fireworks, but couldn’t see them. As a side note, there’s a whole different type of people at the NYC bus station at 2AM where we made our connection.

In 1999, [WETV?] Public TV station was on Massachusetts Ave., northwest from Union Station.

In 1999, the surrounding area was OK to walk around in the daytime - except when near the Public TV station.

CATO Institute, the Heritage Foundation, and the American Enterprise Institute were all on Massachusetts Ave.

If voters or those counting the fraudulent votes thought it was a priority....

A few months ago I walked around a local mall for a couple hours while waiting for a car repair.

It was so dead I walked by each shop counting patrons. As I recall, the total was 29.

Union Station like much of DC started dying after MLKing was killed on 4 April 1968, and the riots started that night.

Martin Luther King, Jr., original name Michael King, Jr., (born January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.—MLK died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tennessee), ..

In Washington DC., by the time authorities had quelled the most intense disorders, more than a thousand fires had been set, more than 8,000 people had been arrested, parts of neighborhoods were ravaged, some blocks lay in ruins, and 13 people were dead, including two at the hands of police.

“People pee and poop here,” she said.

I was through there about 3 years ago and with my huge prostate I was about to bust, but I could NOT find a restroom.

Finally, I stepped into one of the few retail shops and asked the where the restrooms were located. He said something like, "2518". I said, "What"? He said 2518 was the passcode to the store's private restroom, so that's where I went. I never did find the public restrooms.

I could care less about Union Station or any other shxthole city with drug, alcohol and crime problems.

Unlike you, I couldn't care less about cities with those type of problems.

Rural Oregon is still loads better than Maryland or DC.

I went to high school in the DC area (Navy brat.) It was a pretty decent place back then. We were in Fairfax County, VA. My high school BFF with whom I am still very close friends with today lived in the District near Embassy Row when she was a single young adult. When I’d go up to visit my family there, I always spent a couple of days with her, going to great restaurants, fun dance clubs and shows around DC. Great times.

I’m sure rural Oregon and many other places are much better than inside the Beltway now. It sounds like it has really turned into a hellhole.

I’m guessing that COVID lockdowns with mandated travel restriction hit stores renting space in a train station pretty hard.

Yup. I think it’s true. Our malls started converting to individual stores spread around the parking lots. Damn shame. Used to enjoy xmas shopping with my friends for a boys night out. Food drinks and the scenery was great. Wink wink. Last time we went it was dead. That was 2 years ago. I guess we’ll see if we even try this year.

Ask the politicians who have been lining their pockets in DC to quit sending billions of taxpayer funds to foreigh countries for kickbacks, to pay for it..

They have broken us financially and obviously have more love for their fellow criminals they have coddled who have ruined the place, than they do for us.

Screw Washington DC.
