Well . . . . . it has begun.

I was told when I was younger that I would more than likely develop arthritis and now, at 74, My hands are quickly becoming sore and stiff albeit not RA type deformed.

I have access to OTC pain creams and rather than ask about this one or that, what are my fellow FReepers using to keep their nimble fingers nimble.

All orgamic ?
Lidocain ?

etc.

Thanks

I find Tumeric to be the best solution. We even give it to our dog (Labrador Retriever) who is 12 years old. Without the Tumeric he limps and is unable to run.

You have to use a high quality and with black pepper added. I use:

I take two a day. Allow it to build up in your body for 2 or 3 days before you see maximum relief.

Will defintely check it out.

Both my hands are now ‘deformed’ as knarf puts it.

I was tested once for RA, and the doc said I had it, but I had/have doubts about the test results.

Given that I am of Scotch-Irish extraction, this appears to be genetic...

When i did the whole30 diet my knee pain was greatly reduced..probably because no added sugars allowed..

If you cant cut out sugar try at least to cut out high fructose corn syrup

I will counter this..if you have histamine intolerance..and many have it but have no idea...spicy can inflame you. My joints hurt far more when i eat a spicy sausage link from costco.

Each person has to experiment with radical eating to figure out your triggers..like the poster with the dark chicken

You could have RA AND it be genetic.

Irish have a lot of screwed up genes..especially if you have traveling irish genes

I had a whole genome test done. It is fascinating that i have several variations for dwarfism and such issues but no one in immediate recollection has fallen victim..and oh..lots of RA variations

I have strong irish genes on both sides of each parent. Some black irish and red head irish

Gelatin (mixed in some OJ or flavored drink, or, put into empty capsules purchased from Amazon) helps me a lot. I get it at Walmart.

Are you consulting an upper extremities ortho doc? Or, his PA? Have you had xrays of the affected area? They can offer such various remedies. Steroid injections up to 3 a year. That helps me when I've occasionally needed it.

CMC arthroplasty for really severe cases. The recipient loses some thumb strength with that, but it helps to ameliorate the symptoms.

Have you tried wearing a nighttime splint? That helps as it keeps the thumb immobile which prevents irritating the affected joint which allows it to somewhat recover.

Also, NSAIDS are good. The two I use are ibuprofen (4 tablets; 200 mg each) as needed. And Voltaren gel. Both are over the counter at Walmart.

Don't forget to exercise. I work out with weights and machines two days a week. Basically, stretching exercises with resistance. And am on the treadmill 2 to 3 days a week.

Lots of silly advice on this thread. Good luck.

I second turmeric/yellow curry...it’s an excellent anti-inflammatory, but one also need to be mindful that it’s also a blood thinner.

I have really bad knees myself (as well as fingers and other joints).

We’ve started using Arnica (roll-on, jell, or oil) It did away with all the inflammation in my joints, and, I can walk much better than I was before.

Just read the instructions and go.

you can try OTC diclofenac gel ... it used to be prescription-only ... works well for me ...

quite a few brands now ...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G5SHMYY

maybe even better price with goodrx and a script:

https://www.goodrx.com/voltaren-gel

i like the amneal brand (script only) because it’s rose scented ...

turmeric

I blend my own powdered curry (kind of sweet and fruity flavored) and sprinkle it on my food (after it is cooked - heat destroys the medicinal properties of turmeric)
