Study shows certain foods reduce hot flashes associated with menopause by 88%
Medical Xpress / Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine / Menopause ^ | Oct. 19, 2022 | Neal D. Barnard et al

A new study found that a diet intervention is about as effective (88%) as hormone replacement therapy (70–90%) for reducing menopausal hot flashes, without the associated health risks.

The WAVS trial—the Women's Study for the Alleviation of Vasomotor Symptoms—found that a plant-based diet rich in soy reduced moderate to severe hot flashes by 88% and helped women lose, on average, eight pounds in 12 weeks.

"We do not fully understand yet why this combination works but it seems that these three elements are key—avoiding animal products, reducing fat, and adding a serving of soybeans," explains Neal Barnard, MD. "Our results mirror the diets of pre-Westernized Japan and modern-day Yucatán Peninsula, where a low-fat, plant-based diet including soybeans is more prevalent and where postmenopausal women experience fewer symptoms."

"These results suggest that a diet change should be considered as a first-line treatment for troublesome vasomotor symptoms, including night sweats and hot flashes," explains Dr. Barnard.

Included in the study were 84 postmenopausal women reporting two or more hot flashes per day. They were randomly assigned either to an intervention group—consisting of a low-fat, vegan diet, including half a cup of cooked soybeans daily—or to a control group that made no diet changes for 12 weeks.

"This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a dietary intervention for menopausal symptoms," Dr. Barnard explains. "As well, it is precisely the diet that would be expected to reduce the health concerns of many women reaching menopause: an increasing risk of heart disease, breast cancer, and memory problems."

A low protein, low fat, high-carb diet with soy is what they claim works well.

Bull. It’s because of the phyto-estrogens, and they know it. But after about 5 years ago they started denying that phyto-estrogens affect people’s bodies because they wanted me to keep eating soy.

I’m going to start calling them “Soy Deniers”

When I go low-carb, it’s actually good eatin’ (steaks, seafood, etc., like you say) although not always economical, but there are plenty of vegetables you can eat. The main exceptions are corn and starchy vegetables.

Soy mimics or increases estrogen. It’s not at all good for men. Why do you think feminized young males are call “soy boys”?

The fact that this site publishes anything from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is evidence that it’s a bogus source of health information.

“The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. PCRM is a fanatical animal rights group that seeks to remove eggs, milk, meat, and seafood from the American diet, and to eliminate the use of animals in scientific research. Despite its operational and financial ties to other animal activist groups and its close relationship with violent zealots, “

OTC Black Cohosh helped my hot flashes. Seems I had a very mild menopause compared to other horror stories I’ve heard of or witnessed. I didn’t change my diet in any way, and I’ve always avoided soy. Why would I eat/drink animal food? ;)

“Soy Deniers” LOL!

I don’t recall ever having a hot flash. I thought I might have once, but it was mid-day on Maui so maybe not. I consider myself blessed!

Hmm. Soy equivalent to HRT?

Does that also mean there's something to the "soy boy" stereotype?

Not a fan of soy products, but my meat/fat intake is lower than average and plants in my diet higher. FWIW, I’ve never had a hot flash, and I’m in South Florida.
