A customer says that she tipped $4 on a $17 UberEats order and couldn't get a driver to pick it up in a now-viral TikTok, sparking debate about tipping expectations on delivery apps.
In the video posted by TikToker Syd (@stillpoorandhungry) on Oct. 10, she references the viral "table of shame" of UberEats orders that never get picked up due to a low or missing tip.
"I ordered my food a really long time ago, and it still doesn't have a driver, so I'm worried that it will end up on that shelf of bad tippers," she says in the clip.
She continues that her order total "with fees and taxes" was $17, saying that she even "rounded up" the tip to $4.
"I'm gathering on this app that that is a bad tip. The app was even suggesting that I tip $8 to $10," she says. "I was a server for like ten years. On what planet is a 50% plus tip like a standard tip? Why would I tip almost the equal cost of the entire meal?"

““please give back”...
Sounds like “We are all in this together.” Must be a leftist establishment.
The ubiquitous tip jar is one of the results of the CCP lock down. If the job did not include tips before CCP sympathy lock down, I don’t tip. My better half recently bought take out. The counter server so impressed her that she wanted to leave a $5 cash tip on a $15 order. The server told her that none of the tips go to the workers (!), that they are paid an hourly wage.
After getting a check for a meal, I noticed that the suggested calculated tip now starts at 18%. 15% is long gone. However, much like Vinnie Antonelli in My Blue Heaven, I believe in big tipping.
Even dining in the restaurant is pushing the limits of no being “worth it” anymore. Tough business to be in
Indeed. Especially since prices have sky rocketed because of Biden’s aegis.
Even at my advanced age, I can do math in my head. 20% is easy to figure out. I may round up or down to the next dollar, depending on the service.
But like you, I’ve noticed the significant inflation in the pre-calculated tip suggestions. I don’t like it at all.
Man, that burger sounds delicious!
Sam’s Club now offers delivery in our area.
$8 for Sam’s Plus members or $12 for regular members - regardless of the size of the order.
I don’t think tipping is involved since Sam’s Club employs the drivers and pays for the transportation, from what I understand.
i hate the tip jars! The employees here in Va, at least, are making 12 bux an hour( minimum) so they don’t need a tip to put a damn muffin in a bag.
“During the pandemic people were tipping crazy high amounts.”
Yep, we started tipping $20.20, $20.21, and now $20.22 whenever we go out. Doesn’t matter what the bill is could be less than $20. On occasion when $20.22 is less than 15% we adjust to that.
I used to be a waiter back in the day, most people SUCK!
That’s a good breakdown. I don’t give these things any thought but you made it clear. Seems stupid to be ordering anything delivered unless it’s from an actual eatery with delivery.
I know. I used to be in foodservice and do tip well, but it’s gotten ridiculous. Drove through a local fried chicken joint and there was a tip jar on the window counter. Huh? Made me mad at the owner because they must be paying zip. Why would I tip someone at a drive through counter handing me a box of fried chicken that I’m using MY car and gas to pick up? So stupid.
I think she should call up a friend or two and meet somewhere for dinner instead of becoming a hermit and having it delivered so she can stay holed up in her apartment. She probably works from home too. I worry about what society is becoming. Every time we go out to eat the restaurant is empty, maybe a couple tables of boomers like us, but it’s a constant flow of Uber Eats drivers and individual customers picking up orders. These places used to be packed with diners.
“I used to be a waiter back in the day, most people SUCK!”
My daughter would agree. She shared many stories about the worst customers. Repeat customers who appreciated her service and liked her tipped very well... some would always request her to be their server. I have noticed however that many servers today are “not trained”, come with an entitlement attitude. Places where the servers are there 2, 5, 10+ years ... tend to be local and are the better places for dining out all around. Their advertising budgets are near zero.
She was referring to the tip “suggested” by the app. $8-$10 on $17 is between 47% and 58%.
On the planet where the waiter has to drive their car 6 miles to bring you your food and pay for their own gas I guess.
Ridiculous.
And getting worse all the time.
Used to be 5% tip on drivers. This lead-off story is paying 25%? Insane as it is. Never mind 50%.
Mostly true, but their compensation is not just the tip. Overall though a good analysis of why drivers might ignore the order.
You’re buying shit food. Now you have to wait for it. It then gets to you cold. You also now have to pay considerably more for it.
At work, a lot of the nurses use door dash consistently. They tend to be the ones that are overweight and over opinionated. Some prepare their own food. These tend to be the better looking ones and know when to keep their mouths shut. In my small sample size, the people that use these services are lazy and make bad life decisions in numerous areas of life.
Also I don’t like these 3rd-party deliveries. They don’t reliably get the food and deliver. Adds extra time to the order.
Find a place that does the delivery itself. Much more reliable and time-efficient.
But that DOESNT mean you need to tip more than 5%!
