Is lower cost really the point of owning an electric car?

Virtue signaling is the only reason that anybody can actually be telling the truth............... but they won’t say it.............

No, mandating EV’s is meant to lower the mobility of the peasants and keep them in “smart cities” where they can be tracked and controlled.

For me, it's more of a practical choice. On the surface that seems counterintuitive. But, hear me out. We currently have 2 vehicles. An older, payed off pick up that we use sparingly to launch our boat, to go hunting a couple times a year, or for trips to the dump. We also have a soon to be payed off Subaru Outback, that is my wife's commuter car and our regular running around car. We are currently on the reservation list for an Aptera, an electric 2 seater highly efficient solar augmented charging car. Aptera I am retired, my wife's current commute totals 9 miles a day, and we live where per kWh rates are the lowest in the country at $0.04547. It makes sense for us.

The point is virtue signalling.

Battery powered cars are the dream of white liberal 'elites' who feel superior to folks who care about piddlin' little things like 'what this costs to operate'.

Other than virtue signaling what could the motive be?

Illinois lags the rest of the country in the number of EV charging stations. Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the state $22 million for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations along interstate highways.

Tesla has Illinois mostly covered. Nobody is going to take lower mileage EV's on long interstate drives unless they are hard up. Cars like the Chevy Bolts and Nissan Leafs are metro area commuter cars. Also we have harsh winters here in Illinois. It is very rare to EV's out in brutal conditions..
