Review: 'See How They Run' is a wicked fun whodunit that goes down easy
ABC News ^ | Sept. 16, 2022 | Peter Travers

While you wait for "Glass Onion," the delicious sequel to "Knives Out," to hit Netflix in December, you can indulge your jones for a whodunit by heading to your local multiplex to check out "See How They Run," a comedy-mystery set against the 1953 London theater scene when murder most foul lurks backstage.

Luckily, Scotland Yard is on the case in the rumpled person of "Three Billboards" Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, sporting a wry wit and credible British accent to play Inspector Stoppard, a functioning alcoholic trying not to let booze disrupt his nose for sussing out a killer.

And what a kick that Saoirse Ronan is a fresh breeze of comic bliss playing Constable Stalker, a rookie assigned to assist the inspector while driving him crazy by slapping cuffs on practically anyone who arouses her suspicions, including her boss.

There is also a documentary out there by that name.

It’s about Willie Brown in San Francisco.

I have been watching three related series: Inspector Morse, Lewis, and Endeavour. If you haven’t seen them you might enjoy their complexity and period drama about 1960 thru 1990 is covered. Definitely the better of the British police procedurals with probably the best character development. Best watched in the order I listed. Conservative Laurence Fox stars in one of them.

When A Man Loves...

Great Asian drama with interesting plot lines, a redemption arc, none of the usual Manga tropes, showing real life people overcoming real life challenges. Some romance but more gritty than sappy with a surprisingly sad ending.

For a wild ride fantasy adventure with a lot of romance, try Love Between Devil and Fairy. Lead female’s voice can irritate at the beginning, but gets deeper as the series goes on, so hang in there. Excellent acting, ethereal sets and costumes, and sacrifice for the sake of others. Just a lot of fun and a great escape with enough serious moments in between that you stay interested.

See How They Run is still in theaters. It has had a reasonably broad release -- 2,400 theaters two weeks ago, down to 1,650 as of yesterday -- so if you are in a city of any size, you should be able to find it locally.

I don't know when it will go to streaming or on what platform.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve not heard of that one, but I’ve added it to my watchlist.

I should probably keep a list of the movies I’ve discovered because of freeper recommendations, but I’m keeping too many lists already. Probably 8-10 at this point. I do add all freeper suggestions to my watchlist. The (free) Letterboxd app is great for this.

P.S. I’m a bit confused on the title. I’m guessing you mean When a Man Falls in Love (2013), as that is the only Asian film with a similar title that comes up.

I reserve the right to make exceptions, but I mostly use the movie ping list to highlight current or very recent films. We all have long lists of golden oldies. The question is, what has Hollywood (or the film industry) done for us lately?

That’s not an idle question. If we are agitated about woke Hollywood (yes), it’s not enough to stomp off and grumble, and then rewatch movies that are almost as old as we are for the 147th time. If we want more good movies, we need to support the good ones when they do appear. But we have to hear about them first. A lot of them aren’t heavily promoted. They get a very short theatrical release or none at all, then disappear into a streamer’s catalogue where they hide in plain sight.

So: let’s do each other a favor and toot the horn when we see something good. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

The wifey and I went to see ‘Love you Darling’ last night. The reviews were mixed. But, there is literally NOTHING ELSE she wanted to see.

We both like it. The performances were very good. The plot is confusing.... I won’t say much more. At dinner, after the movie, we spent a lot of time arguing about what we saw. I call that a success. :-)

Not much political in this, that I saw... at all. Just, strange.... and, interesting. Still not sure I understand what I saw. But, I LIKED it. :-)

It’s on Netflix as When A Man Loves.

As you probably already know, Asian dramas may have 2 or 3 working titles. It’s about a loan shark who tries to turn his life around.

Someone on a recent thread mentioned the film, ‘Dog’. We watched it, and it’s excellent:
