When it comes to cooking and baking, it’s a truth universally acknowledged that butter just makes things better.
But with the holiday season coming up, many may have to scramble to find enough butter for their baked goods. That’s according to the Wall Street Journal, which recently reported on a dairy shortage in the U.S. due to staffing issues and lower milk production.
With less butter on shelves and in storage facilities (reportedly the lowest since 2017), that means the price of the yellow stuff has gone up. Over the last year, butter prices have gone up by more than 24.6%, the Wall Street Journal reported, with overall store prices going up by 13.5%
However, the dairy industry is well aware of the issue and is working to supply Americans with the products they need in the months to come.
“We want to run the assets we have harder when we can get more milk off farm,” Joe Coote, chief executive at Darigold Inc, told the Journal.
Those gearing up for the big baking season ahead, should note butter does freeze well, and that there are plenty of substitutes for recipes including: Crisco, olive oil and coconut oil.
“Getting a dairy animal is high on my priority list for after my house is built.”
You know of my struggles with ‘someone’ at my house that doesn’t want a milk cow. When he’s gone, it’s just gonna be me & Bessie, living Happily Ever After, LOL! :)
Have you read any of Jenna Woginrich’s books? I think of you whenever I read them. They would inspire you. Along with Judy (from Jung’s) Jenna is who I want to be when I grow up. :)
I bet one of the paint mixers at Home Depot and such would do a great job of forming butter.
Those were great commercials! :)
Dude! Where’s your daily food post?!?!? Get on the ball!
It could affect bakeries that do a lot of holiday business like Claxton Bakery in Claxton, GA and Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, TX. That’s really bad news.
Butter in quarters is 4.09 in west Michigan. Just regular store brand. Formerly 2.79. It greezes well. Stock up.
This paleo diet I am on until at least a couple of weeks go by makes butter and most other things I really like off the table.
Sometimes a butter biscuit sounds so good.
Where’s the margaritas in that picture?
Well if climate nuts get their way- no cows, no butter!!
Butter shortage?! I have never thought of praying to the soul of BlackElk (RIP), but if he could intervene, he would.
We have one of these. Easy enough. We take turns shaking it while we’re watching a movie. Good cardio workout, LOL!
It takes longer than the THREE MINUTES it says on the gizmo.

I did NOT pay retail for it; bought it new, in box, for a few bucks at a Thrift store.
A Mason jar works just fine, too, but the built-in strainer feature is nice. :)

(My Comment) : My local grocery store lists one pound butter as an advertised "loss leader" item at $3.97.
Be advised that the price will only go up further - lay up a supply in your freezer, before the holidays.
I’m working on perfecting my Shishito Pepper Margarita Recipe. ;)
Me too about 1/2 and 1/2 of each. I use Bertoli extra light. Hardly any flavor.
(I’m just here for the Q thread, gardening thread, any prayer thread, cooking thread and fiber thread and any butter threads.) Used to make my own goat milk butter.
When I was a kid in the 60’s we never had to ‘buy’ butter!......... 😉
Can’t they make butter out of cockroaches and maggots, and Yellowjackets?
Ooops greezes = freezes
I’m on the Mediterranean diet. I’m doing really well with it but cream and butter are off the table. I sneak it in here and there though. Got to.
Ha! Only you would think of that.
