Columbia University students shared mixed reactions to their college ranking last for free speech on campus, with some expressing confusion while also shunning hate speech.
"I think everyone here is very open-minded, and so I'm not really sure where that's coming from," one student told Fox News.
However, Arianna, a senior at the Ivy League school, said, "Of course people think they can't say things. I think people think they might be judged by the majority."
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) ranked Columbia last in its third annual College Free Speech Rankings, which surveyed nearly 45,000 students from more than 200 colleges. The Ivy League university scored a 9.91 out of 100.
"I am surprised by that result," Astrid, a senior, told Fox News. "I don't think that I've personally experienced or witnessed the suppression of free speech at Columbia."
"I think that there is definitely a homogenous point of view at school, but I don't think that opposing points of view are necessarily suppressed either," she continued.
But Astrid added that "hate speech should definitely at least be monitored" on campus.
Numerous other students Fox News spoke with similarly considered Columbia open-minded and tolerant but said hate speech should not be allowed.
"Hate speech, that's not good to be hearing," one girl said. "But I think everything else, as long as it's like furthering ideas, that's good to talk about."
A freshman, Aarush, told Fox News, "I've heard some people with certain political views might not be able to express their opinions because it might be perceived as offensive."
He also said hate speech is unacceptable, that "obviously you can say whatever you want, like, physically, but there's going to be social repercussions."
"People should just be more careful about what they say," he added.

Columbia used to be predominantly jewish. Likely it still is but in the last decade or so it could easily have become more multicult—in line with the liberal shift away from all things jewish.
ANY view that opposes the approved narrative of the day is “hate speech”.
Hate Speech: Anything that the most woke and progressive students/teachers/admin disagree with.
That school evidently doesn’t offer a course on self-awareness.

I think there is too, rigidly enforced by people who think labeling free speech as hate speech makes it subject to suppression. It means that fascists can still both deny being fascists and embrace it proudly.

So, “one student” is a leftist who oppresses others and thinks that is as it should be.
When about 90-95% of the staff/professors are of the progressive variety, then it stands to reason that the students wouldn’t be able to tell that they are pretty bad in tolerance of free speech. It’s like living in a bubble, where everything outside is strange to the bubble dwellers.
Most liberals never make an attempt to understand how they could be wrong about almost everything they believe.

ANY form of speech... be it as an expression as a graphic, meme, or targeted publication; in the context of a joke, comment, open thought/debate, or personal opinion; that doesn’t praise, support or advance their leftist political thought, agenda or views... Is considered “hate speech and fascist.”
In other words... you can’t argue with Marxist idiots, programmed zombies or any of the offended leftist children.
Liberals are extremely tolerant of voices they agree with.

In my time it has always been Left. I covered the Columbia riots in ‘68 for Fordham’s WFUV.FM. Cops wouldn’t let me on campus, station had only one NYPD Press Card and it was at some other location. But I interviewed a lot of students, Columbia and others. The supposed cause was a new gum Columbia wanted to build off campus in Harlem which would displace couple dozen families. But the reality was the SDS and the goal of Revolution. So this is nothing new.
