My children were born in New York City. As toddlers, they played in the American Museum of Natural History, joined baby-music classes on the Upper East Side, gnawed on street pretzels, and threw leaves in the air in Central Park.
I had originally expected to be a Manhattan mom, but over the years I've come to accept they are now southern kids living in Houston, Texas.
They wear shorts year-round, wear sunshine on their skin, crave Whataburger, have never made a snowman, and get pumped for Go Texan Day, dressed in boots, vests, and hats — it's like Halloween twice a year in my eyes.
It wasn't my idea to move from a comfortable life in Manhattan to Houston, my ex's home city. I thought it was supposed to be temporary, but I was wrong.
Texas showed me BBQ festivals, square dancing, bluebonnets, and the flaws of my marriage. Now with a Texas divorce decree and the kids settled in school with friends and activities, it seems like I'm stuck here for good, or at least until my kids grow up.

There are also experiences that remind me I'm in Texas, like a dead snake's skin being tangled in my daughter's scooter wheels, a "beware of alligators" sign at a playground, armadillo sightings, a lack of road shoulders, and guns-and-ammo signs next to a pet store.
I worry about my kids' safety wherever they go while living in a state with historically loose gun laws. I worry about what women's health will be like for my daughter's generation. I debate on how young of an age I will tell her about contraceptives because of the war on women's access to care and treatment in this state.

Where do I send the funds?
Sounds horrible for the kids.
(having her for a mom I mean)
can see why it’s divorced...
I didn’t see anything about custody arrangements
👌👍......................
Perfecto
Well, then, Isobella, GTFO because we do not want your dumb, yankee derriere here in Houston or Texas anyway! GO! NOW!
Wah!! Look at me!! I’m the victim here!!
Back in New York City, she'd be confronted with plenty of snakes, but not the ones that shed their skin. Sure we've got snakes, even Timber Rattlers in the Adirondacks, but she probably hasn't seen any other part of New York State, other than the Rotten Apple she came from.
Worry wart be like all worried. 🙄
A good reason annually for an all-day drive-around.
People get homesick and regret leaving the place they are used to and felt at home in.
There's a lot of nostalgia and romance attached to the places where one grew up. She sees that her kids will have the Texas experience and doesn't object, but she wishes that they also kept something of the New York experience.
I get that she does have very "New York City" political views, but if people can only engage with her in political terms, that may not be her problem.
She apparently likes to be photographed nekkid. Shocking that she’s divorced.
Hey Karen, I think it would be great to return your kids to NYC! They can have fun risking their life in the subways....they can thrill to sights the drug addicts fornicating in the street....and when they are being mugged by street thugs, they can take comfort knowing that the neutered NYPD will slow roll to the rescue.
Have another glass of Pinot and enjoy your delusions.
Boo - effin’ - hoo, babe. I was born in New York as well, but only because my dad was flying F101s at Suffolk County AFB. Mom and Dad are born-and-bred Texans, so I consider myself a Texan with a certificate of birth abroad.

That may not be your thing or mine, but I can understand it.
Back in the 70s in Alaska people said happiness is 10,000 Okies headed south with a Texan under each arm.
Happiiness for me is prune pickers, yankees, wet backs and all other manner of invaders of the south selling out at a loss and going somewhere else. I don’t care where just as long as they leave.
I was wondering when somebody was going to point this out.
uhhh.....New Yooo-awwwk-ahs are a lot less safe than Texans - even those stuck in Houston. Part of it of course, is that Texans are armed and the bad guys know it while those stuck in New Yooo-awwwk are just defenseless prey. The other part is that Texas does not believe in turning lunatics and violent criminals loose.
