My children were born in New York City. As toddlers, they played in the American Museum of Natural History, joined baby-music classes on the Upper East Side, gnawed on street pretzels, and threw leaves in the air in Central Park.
I had originally expected to be a Manhattan mom, but over the years I've come to accept they are now southern kids living in Houston, Texas.
They wear shorts year-round, wear sunshine on their skin, crave Whataburger, have never made a snowman, and get pumped for Go Texan Day, dressed in boots, vests, and hats — it's like Halloween twice a year in my eyes.
It wasn't my idea to move from a comfortable life in Manhattan to Houston, my ex's home city. I thought it was supposed to be temporary, but I was wrong.
Texas showed me BBQ festivals, square dancing, bluebonnets, and the flaws of my marriage. Now with a Texas divorce decree and the kids settled in school with friends and activities, it seems like I'm stuck here for good, or at least until my kids grow up.

There are also experiences that remind me I'm in Texas, like a dead snake's skin being tangled in my daughter's scooter wheels, a "beware of alligators" sign at a playground, armadillo sightings, a lack of road shoulders, and guns-and-ammo signs next to a pet store.
I worry about my kids' safety wherever they go while living in a state with historically loose gun laws. I worry about what women's health will be like for my daughter's generation. I debate on how young of an age I will tell her about contraceptives because of the war on women's access to care and treatment in this state.

Some people spread happiness, some people spread misery, and some people wallow endlessly in the misery they create for themselves. Pity the children.
Ya know Karen, there is a four-lane highway all the way between Houston and NYC. As soon as your kids are on their own, load up your Prius and get going. You might be missed but not by me.
For Beto.
Get a rope.
She’s in the PRoHC (Peoples Republic of Harris County) and that has all of the crime and Rat politics she can want. Not much different from her wanna be utopia, just warmer.
New York City is less of a nice place to live because of two things:
1. Covid
2. Democrat majority city and state.
It wasn’t always like this. The Dem majority has ruined everything. You saw how they overdid it on the redistricting and had to backpedal and lost a longtime Dem rep. They overdo it on everything until it’s so bad it HAS to be reversed. They are like psychotic pigs.
I pray the worst of them will be voted out this November. Even moderate Dems would be better than this crazed crew.
Some people bring joy to any place they go to, others to any place they go away from...
Her kids will turn out better mentally by getting out of NYC.
Thanks that makes my day better.
Hey, Isobella:
Texas also wished you hadn’t moved there either.
Divorced...
Who would have guessed that!
She pines for the way things “USED TO BE” in NYC. Crime and violence are rampant now.
“war on women’s access to care and treatment in this state”
In Texas? We don’t allow the only medical procedure designed to murder...you call that a war
I think this is a completely made up story.
Houston hasn’t had a republican mayor in 40 years. Been going downhill ever since.
.
I know why they got divorced.......................😉
And I know why her husband divorced her in Texas as opposed to New York.
Manhattan sees far more gun violence than Texas, but the liberal worries about Texas. I call BS to the whole article.
“This reads like a parody hoax.”
Agreed.
Many years ago when I was being sought after by head-hunters I was called by a woman from a New York City employer.
I told her point blank that I would never work in or commute to New York City.
I was expecting an argument but she laughed and said:
“Yeah, I get it.”
;-)
1. I made sure they were born in Texas.
2. I taught them all to swim before age 4...my oldest son learned how to swim when he was 2.
Anything else is gravy.
ReEEeeE Ree ReEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
