Watching ME TV, and an episode of the Ed Sullivan comes on, and there is a drag queen, Jim Bailey, who does his best, Judy Garland impression in 1969.

I had forgotten about him, but this brought back the memory. He did Phyllis Diller too.

Modern drag queens look like they’d be perfect for a remake of Killer Clowns From Outer Space.

I remember watching this with my father and brothers/sister at my Grandparents home and each one commenting as to whether they could “tell” if it was a man or not.

Not at all thinking of it sexually. At least I didn’t. More like a game - Can you tell, or not?

Drag Queens back then were a joke that people laughed at.

Today they are deadly serious and wish to be taken that way. And they want kids to take them seriously too.

Back then, this was performance art or people being silly in good fun.

Today, completely different. Completely.

Milton Berle and Johnathan Winters both had ‘skits’ in skirts in various comedy venues.

It was rather common for comedians.

And, there was the Tuna, TX comedy play from the 1990s.

Went to see “Frankie Goes to Hollywood” live at the Roxy (NYC) back in the 80s. The warm-up act was a string of female impersonators. They were awesome - really nailed performances of Cher, Bette Midler, etc. Finale was a chorus line of them dressed up like chickens clucking “In The Mood”.

Same with Liberace on TV - one could run a list (Elton John, Freddie Mercury, etc.) who we just accepted as they were.

Never thought twice about it - we just appreciated them as entertainers.

Must admit to being unsettled at finding Raymond Burr and Rock Hudson on the “out” list. Heck, Marlon Brando’s best friend was Wally Cox.
